As an aside looking at a spare motor the drive is a bevel gear not a worm gear as I thought.

Regards
Judged from the photos the motor and pedalshafts look out of line Dellpitch, suggesting a worm gear, but was the bevel gear you saw a spiral bevel or just a straight tooth bevel?

I have also taken the "plunge" and have ordered a"Compy" from Powerpedals.
Went and had a try on one in S.Moulton yesterday, impressed enough to order and found Phil to be a most helpful and easy to "deal" with.
Will post more when I have had chance to try it out on the hills of Bristol, many of them!

Well done. I look forward to gathering all the gory details! .. I already have ... dellpitch, Tonaro Compy, Powerpedals, Very Hilly, ..... not sure what I'm going to do with bevel gear ... I think I'll just call it a crank drive ...

I am sorry I did not know that were two (or more?) types of bevel gear, from memory
I am going to say that it was a spiral bevel gear, definitely not a worm gear, in the sense that my mechanical engineering from the dim & distance past recalls

Thanks Dellpitch, that could account for the out of line shafts. A hypoid spiral bevel is usually more efficient than a worm and wheel gear. This diagram that vhfman posted isn't informative enough and doesn't seem to show much about a right angle drive:

...and I forgot to mention. We do take the users comments very seriously and we are now in the process of develepoing the new motor with the proper internal clutch which will be totally drag free. The clutch has actually been designed by my dad and we are already inplementing it with another motor company (not 8FUN) The design will be patented and the new motors with bigger hub shell will be able to generate a lot higher torque which will improve the climbing ability. We are expeting now to have a the frist samples ready fairly soon so if you would be interested we could fit one on your bike to see how you feel about it.
As i said in a past email i would be more than happy to try stuff out for you :)

The drag i feel is noticeable, not going uphills i feel thats where the bikes really helps its the other side when your going down or if you feel that you fancy a flat pedal. If i freewheel down hills i really do notice it. This could just be the newness of the hub?? I have done 125 miles on the Race so far so jumped on my none ebike tonight to test it and i can definitely feel drag on the Race and its not me getting used to stuff.

Like i said though when throttling or pedaling with assist i dont notice the drag until i get beyond the legal limit when the hub no longer helps you but im really impressed at how fast you get there. With regards to your new clutch version will it add a lot more weight? And, does it need maintenance?

I have come across a strange problem though, when it rains i have notice the front pads stick and the only way to free them is to rapidly pull the front brake lever and this frees it. I have check over the cables and they move freely it was actually the pads them selves.

I hope im not sounding to critical, picky or negative im still really happy with the Race and think it was the right choice for me, the off road capability is a great option for me and lots of people still comment on how good it looks :)

Couldn't remember what it looked like so I used the "force" and found you and the image of your bike in about 5 seconds using spreadsheet technology... and yes.. it does look good!

Hi Jon,

That's actually first time when I hear about this issue. I also used my brake in the rain but haven't noticed anything like this. Normally in the caliper there should be two magnets that pull the pads away. Would you be able to check if those pads are actually pulled by them?

all the best

Andrew

I thought it strange too Andrew but like i said a jiggle of the lever and it self righted, i will check the magnets later tonight. I like these calipers, admittedly they the first ive ever had but for fine tuning and adjusts they are the easiest brakes ive ever had :)

Congrats

Hello Jon
Just catching up with the posts on the forum and see that you finally made your choice and went for the Oxygen bike in the end. I'm sure you will have many miles of happy cycling on it. I've now done over 300 miles on my Oxygen city and am as happy with it now as I was when I got it. It makes light work of my 8 miles to work and the odd ride down to the pub by the canal!
Happy Cycling
Keith

Thanks Kieth :)

Andrew, I have stripped down the brakes one thing i did notice was that the caliper was mis-aligned. The screws were tight so it hadnt moved it was assembled that way not sure whether its done by the dealer or before shipping but it seems as that is what was causing the sticking and increasing drag on the front wheel. Now that i have aligned it correctly the front wheel spins much more freely
