the B on the front of the beautiful e/car was not for me lol and i am ashamed to say i am not sure what it stands for
Battery? ;)

Seriously, it could be a Bersey. Walter Bersey apparently built electric cars and cabs in London between 1893 and 1899. They used 3.5 hp motors and ran at 9 mph for up to 30 miles.

That's the good thing with lead-acid batteries, they can be refurbished time and time again indefinitely.

Not sure if you know, but early electric vans from the 1920s were doing Harrods and John Lewis Partnership deliveries in London right into the 1960s.

In 1899 a French electric car held the world land speed record at 68 mph, and by 1902 an American model was demonstrated at 80 mph, but sadly crashed and killed two spectators. Without an audience it was later claimed to have achieved 120 mph.

Progress since then, zero it seems.

Hi flecc i am not very well up on electric cars or bikes for that matter ,but i am very interested,i always thought that years ago there were no electric cars ,so i am amazed that they were capable of such standards ,and cant help wondering why no ,or very little progress has been made .best wishes Brian,

Its the battery Brian. Electric vehicles that pick up power externally have made huge advances over the years, ultra high speed trains and modern tram systems are superb.

Having to carry batteries which have made little progress over the years is a huge performance penalty.

Hi flecc ,i still cant understand why we cant charge the battery whilst going along on the bike ,when i went for a ride on saturday i knew i was going to be covering a few miles ,up to 40 miles ,so thinking i am on the canal for most of the 40 miles ,if i use some of the lower gears i will be able to peddle there without much use of the battery, and save the power for the return, which is what i did ,but i cant help thinking why cant we charge the battery whilst peddling only ,seems wasted energy to me .,best wishes Brian.

The energy conversion loss is too high Brian. There's no something-for-nothing, you would have to put in extra effort over that cycling energy to gain a charge and the charge you gained when eventually used would only give back part of the extra effort you put in. That makes it pointless. To get extra range, it would take much less effort from you to carry a second battery and gain much more at a minute running cost, a typical full charge costing under 6 pence.

If no extra range is wanted, cycling as you are at present is the most efficient.

From my reading on the subject, there are quite a few conspiracy theories out there as to why electric has not been developed. The main one being that the oil companies were involved in sabotaging any new inventions (and inventors) that might pose a threat to their oil empires, have a google, makes interesting reading.

OMG.....please dont tell me that we are not only in danger fron traffic/pedestrians/loose dogs etc but also living in fear of being bumped off by the oil firms.......I never realised this pastime could be so dangerous :)
Time to get my helmet on.......oops, sorry Flecc :) :)

The conspiracy theories really are rubbish though. As I illustrated above, electric power has been developed to a superb degree and millions travel daily at speed and in comfort by electric. Electric vehicles like trains that get their power from outside sources easily outperform fossil fuel vehicles, proving they have been developed just as much or even more than fossil fuel types.

It's the battery that's the problem, and anyone who says there has been no effort at developing batteries is bonkers. The problem is a simple physical one, electricity is a dynamic condition that cannot be stored conveniently, for practical storage it has to be converted into a chemical state and the achievable energy density then is only a fraction of that of fossil fuels. All energy conversion entails loss of efficiency, and using a battery gives a two way loss, the conversion into a chemical state for storage and the conversion back to electricity for use.

If only small amounts can be stored, only small amounts are available for use so powers and performances of battery vehicles are low.

There is conspiracy theories on hydrogen cars too, apparently every time someone comes close to a possible discovery the oil companies buy the design. I cant say thats true or not as its a theory, but if you look there is a conspiracy theory for nearly everything.

Does anyone know if there is a econvention in the UK? A purpose being to show off all that is electric and stuff?

Well i bought my beautiful Tonaro Bighit ,and in the week i proudly set off for work,
on the way i stopped off at the Supermarket,so i locked my bike up using the old cable lock type ,the one that has all the wires and plastic coating on the outside ,i would not normaly use one of these ,but with having two electric bikes,i had not put the D lock one in my bag,but left it with my other bike,i was in the supermarket for a very short while ,but when i came out i realised i had no key with me ,
YOU,can imagine my reaction, i cant leave my bike and go home fetch the key ,because some one was bound to steal it ,lol but just as i thought what the hell am i going to do ,my mate turns up on his cycle, which is brilliant in a way as we both work at the same firm, but not good because i have been taking the mickey out of him about how rubbish normal cycles are lol,his reaction was if you beg a little ,and take every thing back that i had said ,he would go and fetch a hacksaw from where we work,
eager to please i was soon begging, and he promptly came back with a hacksaw ,
and what i cant beleave is he cut the cable in seconds, and there were a lot of people about and no one chalenged us,but the cable might as well have been made of string,
wow what a load of rubbish ,and a wake up call for me ,very best wishes Brian.
Glad this story had a happy ending, was lucky your work mate turned up!

Lynda,
I'm intrigued as to how you knit, spin and hug your pommy whilst riding your bike! Is there a new sat-nav technology I've missed?
Mike
I spat my cuppa tea out when I read this earlier!! LOL!!!

Scarrabri - so glad your workmate turned up. This is the very reason I always lock my locks when not in use - I figure its better that way, somehow....
