Are cycle lanes a good thing or a bad thing?
I agree with Fishingpaul and if I see a cycle lane then I often take a detour to back streets (nearly always a way through) in order to put distance between me, my bike and lorries, cars, buses etc. There are exceptions to this though as cycle paths purposely designed to put real space between drivers and cyclists are great e.g. through green spaces. Bit of a cheat, but I have been weighing up buying a kiddie trailer as a visual deterrent to mad drivers as I've noticed that I always gave them a wide berth when driving (also read it in the theory of big). Think that it's quite important to take a pragmatic approach to road safety adopting a purposeful riding style with the aim of communicating a message of "Yes, I'm a road user too. Respect me and I'll respect you.", but when given the option simply go down the route less traveled. It's nearly always nicer, cleaner, more interesting and with far less Mad Max moments .

New batteries
Hi Wizard, That's my bike and the understanding I have is that 250w is the legal continuous output, but this means that the motor may peak much higher under demanding situations. It seems to me that the voltage = engine size and amps = fuel tank capacity. Hope that makes some sense as I am kinda getting lost and prob need an intro to electric vehicle science to clear my understanding. Think my bike would be more efficient if it was lighter, but the rub is that if it was lighter I wouldn't like to leave it anywhere as it would be stolen like my last few push bikes. ps hope the batteries work out and will defo go to the same supplier if they work out for you when my power pack gives up the ghost.

more power needed
Hi a415, Maybe try mr-motorvator but I think you may need an electric moped/ scooter rather than a peddle assist bicycle as these are designed as an electric powered form of transport rather than electrically assisted. Still in my early days of pedal assisted cycling and the power assist came as a bit of a shock as was used to motor bikes and was, initially, disappointed by the amount of power from the motor. I am now in the frame of mind that I have a peddled bicycle that has a bit of an electric boost for the exhausting bits rather than I have an electric motorcycle that I can assist if need be. Steep learning curve for me!

New batteries
Yep, much prefer it as doesn't slow the bike down with cut off's. Went down a longish slope on Sun and got 22mph. I have an idea that battery life/range will be better as the pedelec function almost always seemed to be on. Time will tell :-)

New batteries
Hi Wizard, Good luck and please keep me up to date on the batteries. Sounds like a good deal as I suspect our original batteries may not have been deep cycle.

visibility
Hi All, Have a quick read of the 'Theory of big' regarding cyclists and visibility. The theory of BIG I wear predominantly dark bike clothing, but use panniers to increase bike size, a bar end mirror, good bright lights and big jackets to increase my road presence.

Think I'll stick to 250 Watts!
Check it out... Electric bike 48V USPD Home Conversion to 1.4KW 32MPH!! ps dont try this at home!

Tricycles
Hi Tony, Excellent. try googling piaggio mp3 for a moped version.

Derestrict via new controller?
No and thanks for the link :-) What an elegant solution and think that is the way to go with maybe a smaller wheel. could also fabricate a rear rack for extra carrying capability. Yep, low slung batteries on either side. I LOVE this. I have a new form of personal transport and a hobby thrown in to boot!

Derestrict via new controller?
Hi Flecc, Lol, yep that's the one!

Derestrict via new controller?
Hi Wizard, Got a dose of cold at the mo so not biking for a day or so to the best of my recollection (did several tries)it was a small black three wired push on connector and wires were black, red and yellow. I checked by throttle by using the kick stand as a 'third wheel' and pulling the bike towards me so as the rear wheel was off the ground and then checked by engaging the throttle and there was no signs of limitation e.g motor cut out. dont think it will make a huge diff to speed maybe a few mph,but will stop the annoying cut off. See how it goes and I may change the smallest rear cog to smaller to increase top speed.

Pumping Gas
Damn! We missed the obvious. Helium under pressure is contained in big heavy containers. End of. Anyway, back to the drawing board.

Derestrict via new controller?
Woohoo! my lil, fat, bike is now derestricted. Was a trial and error thing with unplugging connections and seeing what happened and plugging them back in again. Mods are almost coming to an end, with only the pannier rack to be fitted to modified mountings. Tho think that my bikes batteries are not up-to-speed re: range I require, but this will be checked in throttle mode rather than peddle assist as I feel pa is sometimes not required, but kicks in anyway. Musing about building a small unicycle, close linked (9") trailer to house batteries. All in all, great fun :-)

Pumping Gas
Hell !!!!! I was only thinking the same thing last night re tyres and maybe helium cushions under/ around batteries. have a feeling we may be missing something tho. My excuse is the day we did science at my school I was off with a cold :-)

Replacement battery options ?
# two types in the past, both high discharge like those we need, and a different form made for burglar alarm backup and the like....# Hi Flecc, More than a little confused now. Does a 5hr discharge rate mean the battery will power applications at low amps e.g. for 5hrs rather than allow for heavy amp draw "bursts" for shorter periods?

How NOT to build an electric bicycle.
Oh NOOOOOO! I've seen something similar on youtube and all I could see was a kiddies fingers getting caught between the chain and drive sprocket. Nuts!

Winter Maintenance
For me or rather my bike its Petroleum jelly on nuts/bolts/controller box/switch gear joins. WD-40 on bright work Three in one oil on chain and for me old gortex jacket, old bike leggings, well waterproofed work boots and a Ushanka for my head :-)

Replacement battery options ?
Hi Wizard, My battery pack is exactly the same. At the moment my batteries are ok (fingers crossed), but when the times comes for a change I will use the original battery container as a tool/ wet weather lockable storage compartment and mount new batteries under the, yet to be fitted, pannier rack. Probably larger cells in an under rack enclosed shelf. Might be a workable solution?

Derestrict via new controller?
Hi All, Will keep all informed of my progress and the closest that I have been able to track the origins of my bike is....... Electric Bike (TDE01Z-443) - China E-Bike,Electric Bicycle,Bicycle in Electric Bike & Parts One of the great things about bikes (normal, electric and motor) is the relationship I find between vehicle and user/ owner that, for me, doesn't exist with other forms of transport. Could be the nature of exposure to the elements and danger and I am finding that I am constantly tinkering with my bike. Excellent :-)

CO2 and Petrol savings calculator
Hi All, Might be a bit geeky, but interesting to see how much CO2 we are not contributing to the atmosphere at point of usage. The Bike Geek Calculators — The Bike Geek ps savings are prefixed in $.

Derestrict via new controller?
Hi Beeps and thanks, Will give the over-ride work-around a go this weekend. Not sure about the motor. The bike is a full suspension entry model with, I think, a brushed 250w motor. Wasn't looking for a dual suspension bike, but due to the weight 38Kg and subsequent 'pothole, speed and gravity' mix I am really glad I did. Haven't cycled properly for years and the condition of the roads is truly awful. Where did my road tax go????? Having a bit of trouble coming up with a suitable solution to fitting a rear rack and panniers, but will get there soon and am sticking to the mountain bike tyres for winter (going to use tube liners to reduce puncture frequency).

Derestrict via new controller?
Hi All, I am loving my electric bike. Great fun One thing I do find annoying is when the pedal assist 'decides' that I'm going fast enough. My bike has a 36v controller (WZK-80 2JL, 36v, 15A+-1, 31.5v +-0.5, 26" data markings) and a hub motor. My question is.....If I swap my controller for a higher wattage output or wheel size information will this allow my bike to go faster? TIA Capn_phil68

Cyclist age
Pushing forty, but no-one (yet) has had a dig, just the opposite. Smart and cool popping up.

Changing the speed cut off point
ps it also seems that there needs to be a certain amount of pedal rpm before pedal assist kicks in.I am riding mine as a normal geared bike eg low at lights and stops and then work thru the gears to top and then try to keep it at around 12-14 mph and that seems to satisfy the 15mph limit. Being a car driver for years it seems the speed Iamdoing is VERY slow, but with the gains at junctions and short cuts my commute is around 5 mins longer, but lots more fun (forgotten how much fun a bike is!).
