October 7, 200817 yr One side effect of the cable upgrade seems to be the disintegration of my rear pads, they have worn at an incredible rate. I have replaced them tonight with some Clark's premium MTB pads so I'll see how these fare.

October 14, 200817 yr me looks at all that wrapping around the cables and decides to put off replacing them until another day. Maybe tomorrow... It's much easier than it looks to remove the wrapping, it's not sticky at all and more like the cheap cable tidies that computer shops sell. You may want to take a photo before dismantling it so you can see how it goes back neatly, I didn't but it wasn't hard to guess.
October 17, 200817 yr Wibble's log.. Star date - 14th Oct 2008 New cables finally connected!. WOOT! I couldn't wrap them back up the way they originally were because the new cables aren't as flexible, which I suppose is a good thing as it shows that the outers are made from stronger stuff. I'll get to test them out tomorrow to see if they're any better.. Over and out..
October 17, 200817 yr I'll get to test them out tomorrow to see if they're any better.. They shouldn't feel at all spongy now, when I did mine they felt much harder with me not able to pull the lever back to the grip as I was doing before. If the disk is correctly adjusted it will feel much more like a hydraulic system with braking controlled more by pressure than actual lever movement.
October 19, 200817 yr Best report in or you'll be thinking my new brakes have failed and I'm tangled up under a tractor somewhere. I'm happy to say my brakes are now much better. I expect my brake pads to last longer now because I wont have to constantly apply them in order to hold back on my speed when going downhill. Previously I had to constantly limit my speed in case something popped up in front of me. http://bf.rubinplus.net/bf2stats/imgs/skidmark_a.png
November 5, 200817 yr Hi Guys Whilst I agree the cables on the Wisper are a bit spongy/stretchy, has anyone's actually snapped/torn? I am still riding with mine after 9 months and whilst yes they do need tightening on a regular basis they have not let me down yet I guess they will give up eventually but I am sure both won't go at the same time? I am just holding out and will put them to the test I guess, so will let you know how long they last and boy I apply that pressure as don't go slow!!!

Seriously though - you may find that your brakes get better as time goes on as they should become less stretchy. My fancy new brake cables were prestretched and so worked straight out of the box. I dunno how they prestrech them. Maybe they get all the old brake cables that were thrown away in China? hehe Brake cables in general are very very strong and I've never known one to snap. Me and my friends used to ride BMX's when we were younger and we did all those silly tricks that involved very heavy brake usage and not once did a cable snap.

I will bear that in mind when mine needs replacing, knicker elastic that is Well I will officially test them to the end and take them to their limmit! I still have the original tyres too but do have a pair of Marathon plus in the shed if needed. Had one pucture so far after running over a large shard of glass but fingers crossed eh I love watching the stunts people do on the BMX's and it is reassuring to know the cables shouldn't snap. Happy Leccy Biking!
February 18, 200917 yr Has anyone else changed their brake cables besides Wibble and Mussels ? I know I should but it does seem like a lot of money for a couple of cables, or am I just tight ?
February 18, 200917 yr Has anyone else changed their brake cables besides Wibble and Mussels ? I know I should but it does seem like a lot of money for a couple of cables, or am I just tight ? I think "Phil the Drill" might have done it too (from memory)! However, Bob "Blew It" traced the problem to the brake levers which are made of plastic. (Wisper upgraded the brake levers last year because of this problem). PM David "Wisper Bikes" and I'm sure he'll add you to the list of people (me included) wanting the new more solid levers.

February 18, 200917 yr I do have the metal levers You brake may not be set up right, does the disk flex at all when you pull the lever?
February 20, 200917 yr Plastic? I do have the metal levers Hi Killjoy They have never been made of plastic or elastic! It was simply a case of the "pull" on the brakes was not long enough with the old levers, the new and current ones are amazingly good. I will put you on the list for a free pair. All the best David

All the best David Sorry didn't mean to say that the lever itself was plastic (that's metal alright) but the body on mine seems to be and it flexes as you pull the lever....however, you're right the pull isn't really long enough on the old levers. (My front brake cut-out switch has now stopped working ... I'll have to see if it's just a broken wire or something more difficult to fix.) (Fixed! It was a broken section of wire, new section soldered in... Nice to see you are using waterproof switches & sealed connections all the way round ) Edited February 21, 200917 yr by torrent99
February 22, 200917 yr Brakes Hi Torrent Yes they were awful, you are on the list for a free pair of the new levers. Re the brake cut out, I am pleased you managed to sort it out. Best regards David
February 22, 200917 yr Hi Torrent you are on the list for a free pair of the new levers. Best regards David Excellent service once again!! Many thanks Steve
February 25, 200917 yr Works 905e Brake Systems My model is fitted with a Zoom front calliper which has been superb for the last 17 months or so, ok a little adjustment has been required which is really easy due to allen key access through the wheel spokes, All I need is a new set of pads as they are about to grind the disc away:mad: The levers are very loose and wobble about due to wear in the level pivots, the water seals on the cable(electric) entry points are rubbish, switches are disconnected to stop constant cutting out, if seal have been improved since Oct 07 delivery, I could do with a set, please advise on cost etc. Rear brakes are Shimano Vtype (or appear to be) and work fine, have replaced a few sets of blocks (old timer term). Did have all the cables changed at the first service last Easter due to poor action (according to my local bike man) and the bottom bracket was also changed along with the head bearings which were the main reason for booking the service as it was getting very notchy (the steering) apart from that all is fine and these bits didn't exactly cost the earth, the bottom bracket is ready for changing again this year. So Dave price and availablility please for Zoom Pads and seals for switches if poss. Cheers Mike

March 16, 200917 yr just a small note but on a £1200 bike that i am seriously thinking about buying should i be worried that small ( in my mind ) details like this haven't been thought about and fixed at source ? if multiple owners are reporting the same problems after a short period of owning the bike what else is going to crop up in the medium/long term ??? i understand that bikes are bikes and all riders have their own tastes as to the way they are set up , but i dont expect to pay what is the equivelent of a small family car then have to carry out what seems to be adjustments or upgrades just to make the bike stop safely ! i may be being a little dramatic here but surely this is a problem the guys at wisper should have noticed and corrected ? cheers big jus I agree. The rear brake on Mrs Lopez's recently acquired 705SE cannot be satisfactorily adjusted. Option 1 is to set the brake so that the rear wheel will run freely without the shoes binding. But then the large mechanical advantage and stretchy cable mean that when the brake lever is pulled so far that it contacts the handlebar, the brake is still not properly 'on'. Option 2 is to set the brake so that it can be properly applied. But then the shoes bind when the brake is 'off', and the wheel won't run freely.
March 16, 200917 yr Brakes Hi Ruy Sorry to hear that you are having problems. All our brake problems have now been resolved and we would be pleased to either fit new parts to your bike or send them out to you. Please contact Norman at service@wisprbikes.com for help and advice. Best regards David
