Dire news indeed and we are heading into a disaster, however a word of caution is in order.

may be not.

if the result of the election is indeed the death of hard brexit then things will get better. Mark my word, the City will rejoice.

So now the Queen's speech has been delayed or postponed......perhaps the dear old lady is feeling a little under the weather. Or perhaps there is a more significant reason??

Tom

It really was the reason I gave in this post, antiquated Britain.

They must be very easily pleased, only dropping the whole stupid Brexit Gamble will please me, who the heck wants to be

Some poor goat is currently being fleeced and scudded.

I gave the reason some while ago in another thread.

The BBC news earlier stated that this parchment will not be made from goatskin, but they are almost certainly wrong, as usual.

calf skin?

The way they stated it appeared to say no animal involved. Calf is one of the skins used for parchment, though strictly speaking it's then called vellum.

I believe that for the Queen's speech, the parchment will be made from goatskin to be consistent with the centuries of previous stored Kings/Queens speeches. No paper reliably lasts long enough.

.

Have just read that one of the reasons the Queens speech has been delayed it that it has to be written on goat skin ( vellum) and this takes a few days to prepare and dry.

When I read this I checked that it wasn't April 1. Some poor goat is currently being fleeced and scudded.

Or maybe the Tories have found a source within No 10,hehe.

KudosDave

As usual they're blethering shite. The election date was known for ages and no matter who won, they'd have still needed that goat's skin. ;)

Theresa May, Jeremy Corbyn and Nicola Sturgeon all need to resign. They all claim to have won something and they all actually lost something.

The only acknowledged winners were the DUP and the only acknowledged losers were UKIP. At least Paul Nutcase had the decency to resign.

Wrongly, for if they imagine the 48% have given up they are no wiser than Mrs May

Conveniently ignoring and denying our existence has become something of a mantra with the politicians, this will prove a disastrous error before too long, when the true horror of the consequences of brexit hits the public consciousness and its standard of living.

Woe betide them then.

It's apparently not the availability of the skin but the ink drying time in leather before it can be handled, very much longer.

They don't use the usual modern water based ink since it fades, they have to use traditional composition inks.

.

if the tories try to go for no deal or a hard brexit, they won't have the majority to pass it in 18 months time. There will be fresh election.

I wonder if a new government can then pull out of A50?

Basically the real reason is that she can't get the speech ready until she's sure she's given the DUP what they're asking for.

Is Brexit a giant STITCH-UP? EU talks DELAY as Tories say we SHOULD stay in single market

THE long-awaited start of Brexit talks next Monday is now likely to be "indefinitely" postponed in the wake of Britain's shambolic general election.

Prime Minister Theresa May's hopes for a solid start to major negotiations were left shattered after she lost her Commons majority.

While official communications between Britain and Brussels has remained open, senior EU officials said it looks increasingly unlikely that any "substantial" talks will begin until Mrs May has a more secure government in place - which many believe will never happen.

It came as several senior Tories, led by Scottish Conservative Leader Ruth Davidson, openly said Britain should now seek to remain in the EU single market and KEEP freedom of movement.

It was the first concrete sign that Brexit is being deliberately delayed, or worse, as part of a broader political agenda. One senior EU official gleefully claimed that Theresa May has “lost control over her own government”,

I may have misunderstood what was going on, but can anyone remember what Brexit was supposed to consist of? I for one seem no longer able to remember what it was all about.

Brexit secretary David Davis FORCED to concede UK will bow down to EU's KEY demand

DAVID DAVIS was forced to concede Britain will adhere to European Union demands not to discuss a free trade deal before the issues of the bloc’s Brexit divorce bill.

It isn't an EU demand it is part of the membership rules we agreed to

From the Independent

"

Brexit negotiations could be delayed for a year as the European Union will draft a new mandate for chief negotiator Michel Barnier if Theresa May insists on discussing a new trade relationship at the same time as Britain's divorce bill.

Senior sources for the 27 nation bloc have said they may put the talks, which are due to commence on 19 June, on hold, while they restructure their plans.

They had been planning to resolve the divorce bill, discuss citizens rights and resolve the issue about the border with Ireland before discussing trade.

“If they don’t accept the phased negotiations then we will take a year to draw up a new set of negotiating guidelines for Barnier,” one senior EU diplomat told The Guardian.

Imagine the damage that will do!

Yes, but she'll have that in the next couple of days leaving plenty of time to go ahead next Monday. But not using a parchment printed speech.

Personally I think they'll delay the day to stick to tradition. That will also avoid the clash with the start of the Brexit talks on Monday.

... No as I stated a few times before the letter was sent, once A50 triggered the UK is no longer in the driving seat . That is why I made the suggestion last week that the EU as an act of humanity , petition the ECJ to have the previous letter set aside, on the grounds that there is now no competent authority behind it. The UK could oppose this if they wished and then the action of leaving the EU could proceed.

Any UK Brexit strategy is currently in tatters, Everyone in the world knows that, so it would be insane to proceed.

At the present the UK has a government pro tempore.,in a caretaker capacity only , until their legitimacy is ratified by the new parliment. They cannot initiate any action, except in an emergency. They the politicians, cannot even negotiate. Civil servants can in those circumstances where the parameters have been previously set out.

Simply the UK needs its parliament to meet. This can be a more protracted activity than some of your pundits are assuming... It has taken the NI assembly a number of months and they are not sorted yet. Think about it , DUP makes its proposals , preliminary negotiating team with selected Tories discuss with them. Then both sides bring the negotiated arrangements back to their respective bodies and vote. The cycle might need to be repeated a few times before there is agreement. .. Who knows there might be a few Tories who find what the DUP want as unacceptable... Too soft a Brexit, too hard a Brexit, inadequate social services , excessive social services etc...

The DUP are not a soft touch.

.. well certainly not againstst those retaliatory nuclear strikes .

But the logic of the need to write the thing on goat or calve skin in advance of the meeting escapes me. I f you want to preserve a record of what was said for historical accuracy , would it not make sense to transcript after the event.?

Insane? That is the English way! All the ones that aren't completely insane have retired to the Perigord...

I bet they write the Trident attack codes on vellum and forward them to the submarines by courrier pigeon too. After the ink is dry... And for posterity...

I must take issue with the following sentence in your message:

"Any UK Brexit strategy is currently in tatters, Everyone in the world knows that, so it would be insane to proceed."

I believe that there is and never was a BREXIT strategy, so it can't be in tatters. There is nothing to shred.

I have always had a very low opinion of May, but in recent weeks that has become contempt and loathing. Her ego is battered, she will be feeling foolish and stubbornness is clearly setting in. She now presents a real danger and if not stopped will do lasting damage in order to try and save face.

Well I would say the score is currently 5-0 to the EU. Not a word has yet been spoken & not a single demand made around the negotiating table. Yet "only I can lead the BREXIT negotiations" has managed to make a complete fool of herself, self inflict wounds on her credibility and destroy any negotiating hand she may have had.

The EU must be shocked and delighted that zero effort on their part has yielded so much progress for them. I bet they can't wait for her to arrive in the negotiating chamber. It's going to be hilarious, for them.
