He started with 90 grade gear oil, then thinned it down with sewing machine oil for some reason. The whole point of the 90 grade is that it stays on the chain. If you wanted thinner, you could buy 80 grade instead, or even 70 grade, but there's no point.

I use engine oil and have no problems
