Hi Everyone

It's been a while, just to understate things a little. I've been browsing and fascinated by everything that has transpired over the last years. Flecc, so good to see you still contributing, and many others too. Also still fascinated by the location map, which I own but owe to others for the inspiration.

What should I buy? Still love that Wisper 905. Would want none of this legislative nonsense, max power, max range, so definitely off road only.

Cheers, everyone.

If you exceed any of the various max power etc regulations that rules out almost all off road; it can't be ridden anywhere accessible to the public; no bridleways, no bike paths, no canal paths. That just leaves private land (with landowner's permission) and with no right for public access.

Perhaps clarify what you mean by 'Max Power' Django, If your looking at suppliers like Whisper and may i suggest Woosh, (trusted/reputable uk based suppliers) your going to get a compliant machine.

Also the regs have sufficient flexibility to provide a solution to scoot almost anyone anywhere at upto 15 mph..

If you can specify what speed, range, and carry capacity you desire and describe the hills your going to climb locally more helpful replies with specific bikes or builds and shopping lists are much more likely.

If you want max power and legal, look on Amazon and Ebay for anything 48v and 250w. Also look at Cyrusher and Engwe websites. You really need to give more details of what you want if you want to get specific advice.

If one doesn't want any of the legislative nonsense then one can forget about buying a bike, simply buy a moped but......... That means registering one.

It seems today that so many want to be part of the crime statistics by being fined, having points put on licences and having vehicles confiscated.

Good to see you still posting too Struan. At nearing to ninety now I do very little posting and am no longer cycling, but do still travel electric now with a battery electric car.

.

I take it this "off-road" is more akin to cyclocross(Gravel in modern parlance) than horsing it down a trail center red run.

Problem is that currently, the cops are looking out for bikes that look converted, with the notion of confiscating it.

So with that in mind, would a standard hybrid, large battery, and de-restrict, so for all intention purposes it looks like a standard off the shelf Ebike. Less likely to attract attention.

De-restricted will burn through the range, hence the bigger battery.

You'll have to ask Saneagle etc as to whether running a 250w motor well above that and for extended periods will cause long term damage, or make the system dangerous.

a bafang hd has a 30a controller and will run fine at that with max settings could prob push it a bit more say 35a with a different controller then you need a bigger more expensive batt as running a batt non stop at its amp limit could go kaboom :p

It takes me a few months just to catch up with replies my friend and so nice to hear you are still at least electrically mobile. All the very best wishes to you, Tony.

Offroad, actually offroad as in trail centers and built routes deep in the woods, there seems to be a bit of a push towards 100-120+Nm.

(For standard full susser offroad bikes)

If its just to blast up firepaths and well worn farm tracks, Larger battery and get a dongle thingy on a standard BoschShimano/Befang etc motor.

Looks the part and as long as you are never ever ever tempted to blast about on the kings highway and draw attention to yourself, you can use it anywhere, but you've still got the power/speed/ for a few exhilarating runs out in the sticks.

There are many legal ebikes that give you all the power you want. The only thing limited is the speed, though in many cases that can also be adjusted by various means.

My general advice is to get something with a standard Hailong type or rack 48v battery. There are plenty of different styles to choose from. Search for "48v 250w ebike" and take your pick.

Dudes on ebay offer to replace BBSHD controller components with 60A uprated ones = 3120W, though I imagine plastic gears would strip unless replaced with durable but noisy steel, and heat would be a problem.

The unholy din of a Bafang HD with steel gears:

Where you'd find huge capacity high quality 52V batteries capable of 60A continuous discharge for max range offroad, I don't know. This battery is capable of only 40A continuois discharge, according to EM3EV's sales blurb:

Ebay dudes also offer to upgrade BBS02 controllers to 40A.

There are open source firmware projects out there for the BBSHD and BBS02, to experiment with:
