    Shaft Drive

Already rethunked to a point in the shape of the Pinion bottom bracket gearbox. This pic has one connected to a belt drive, but I'm fairly sure I saw a pic of one somewhere connected to a shaft. There are still lots of small bike makers in Germany and Holland, so these things can be hard to...

    Shaft Drive

Inevitably, the maker of a shaft drive system will give you an argument: "Testing has shown that the efficiency of our shaft-drive system is about 92%-94% without regular maintenance. According to Dobrovolsk and Others' "Machine Elements Textbook", the peak efficiency of very expensive chain...

    Kalkhoff instructions

It would appear you can pre-load the spring. Worth doing to get the best out of the fork. If you don't fancy tinkering yourself, any bike shop ought to point you in the right direction - it's a less than two minute job.

    What type of cable!

I've never had much luck with those crimp connectors, although using the correct crimping tool helps. Soldering is a much better job, or a connector with a grub screw grip, if such a thing can be found.

Bike Europe draws attention to illegal tuning kits

Yeah, far too much of it about. This bike company is still pushing its 'preview 2014' brochure. http://www.shop.flidistribution.co.uk/c/ktm_bicycles_ebikes_city-hybrids

Breaking a bike chain using a chain tool?

As you say, missing links work a treat, just replace them after two or three uses to be on the safe side.

Bike Europe draws attention to illegal tuning kits

The regs apply to all ebikes. To me there is a big difference between a Bosch bike with a dongle offering very limited assistance above the limit, and a Stealth Bomber which will do 50mph without pedalling. However, both bikes are equally illegal.

    Kalkhoff instructions

Most forks have some pre-load which is set by twisting a knob on top of one of the stanchions. It's often not obvious which one, as the dummy cap is styled to match. If yours have no adjustment, then there's nothing you can do other than ride the bike. On a £2K bike I would expect some...

Wondering if an e-bike is for me...

You will save a few minutes at most. And you might not if you cop a red light or some traffic. I can't see the practical difference between a 30 minute and a 35 minute journey to work, and trying to hit targets all the time is not good from a safety point of view. Each to his own view, of course.

Breaking a bike chain using a chain tool?

Opinions vary on missing or snap links. Shimano won't entertain them. Single use only is another theory. My mate Chris the mechanic, who takes a sensible view of most things bike, reckons missing links are OK to be used a couple of times. Breaking/joining using a chain tool will also weaken...

Breaking a bike chain using a chain tool?

You might find the front mech comes in handy as a chain guide. CorCoach, a company in Harrogate which aims to do factory quality conversions, fits a front chain guide. http://www.corcoach.com/products10/2.html

Wondering if an e-bike is for me...

As Trex says, you will get nowhere near 30mph on the flat from a Bosch bike. You could dongle a Bosch bike, but all that does is let the motor whirr on above 15mph. At these speeds, the motor is not giving much power. You can change the gearing at either end, sprocket or chain ring. Simplest...

Bike Europe draws attention to illegal tuning kits

Yet more scaremongering. Let's have some decided cases of 'huge compensation claims' falling to the dealer, or to the bloke who leant the ebike rider a pump to inflate his tyres. There are no such cases. And once again, the Bosch system is cited when a dongled Bosch bike is the least likely...

Buying my first pedelac advice please

The Volt looks over-priced for what is. If you want to spend a couple of grand, and get something for your money, have a look at this Kalkhoff. A proper German roadster, handsome rather than pretty, quality parts in all areas, and a whopping 17ah battery. Just a small point, but note the...
