Hi Alan, surely the DAPUSH motor hub is 36 hole? Better double check the hole count before you order, hope you have the correct rim. I wonder what size spokes the hub is designed for 14G or 13G? If you order the spokes get some spares and make sure you get brass nipples as well.

Good luck with the wheel build Alan. I have just built the 8Fun BPM motor in a 26" rim, using custom Sapim Strong spokes 13/14G butted. Unfortunately I had to get them from the USA.

Chris
Yes. Sorry that was a slip of the brain! ... There was only one 36 hole rim in stock on the SJS site so I ordered it:
Sun CR18 16 x 1 3/8 / 349 Side Wall Rim 36 Hole

I dont know what the "349 size" means or whether it or any of the other stuff is significant. I've got a 16" wheel and this is a 16" wheel so I'm hoping its going to work! ...
Can you work out the ERD from these stats or do I have to wait for it to arrive?

Whats the difference between a 14G and a 14G spoke? Is this just a weight thing? The spoke holes in the RIM are .... umm ...standard? .. 2mm or 2.2 mm .. How do you measure a spoke hole in a hub?

I want 36 so .. I need to email them .. and then what? .. is the transaction all done outside of ebay? or do they put up a special posting just for me? ...

Sorry - too many questions ... RTFM ... Got this from Sheldon Brown:

U.S./British 13 gauge is 2.3 mm
U.S./British 14 gauge is 2.0 mm

Not all 16" rims are equal, there have been variants and even the 18" was termed a 16" at one time. The 349 (mm) is a standard one though, as used by Brompton for example, and there are plenty of tyres available for it. A to B Magazine are the knowledge base on rolling and puncture resistances for tyres in this size, the editor and family all Brompton owners over many years.

Alan,
It looks like the Dapush hub is designed for 13G spokes.Depending on the hub flange size 14G spokes will fit OK but there is a chance that the smaller head size can give poor seating or even pull through the hole. The rim hole size should be OK with 13G nipple. But eyeleted rims are usually made for 14G standard spoke nipples, and can be a bit tight with 13G nipples depending on the spoke angle. So you have to decide which spoke size to use. Why not ask daniel.weck as he has the experience of building this wheel size and hub motor.

The 349 size refers to the bead seat diameter of the rim, have a look at Sheldon "ISO/E.T.R.T.O." Brown.

I think you have already read daniel.weck posts on his wheel build. He uses the same rim, so you may be Ok with the ERD he used for spoke length calculations. Or you could wait until you have your rim and take measurements if you want to be certain.

Remember to get some spare spokes. When you have custom lengths it may be difficult to get replacements if you have breakages in the future.

Thanks Chris. I just cancelled my order of the 16" (349) and re-ordered the 16" (304) which is what I got now. Thanks for the tip about the spokes. Did you find some tech docs? .. I've been looking without much success! ..
Thanks again - Alan

I think it is always best to wait until you get the rim and measure the actual ERD and not rely on published specs.

I then use this calculator

I have tried a couple of different brands of 349 rims and found differences in the actual ERD. Like Dan I initially used the supplier from Asia but now use SJS who do a nice line of good value UK stainless steel plain spoke and nipple set. They only do them from 120mm (not a lot of use for the larger hubs in smaller wheels) and in even number lengths and my advice it always to round up.

If a spoke is too short there is little you can do, but if the odd longer spoke pokes up above the nipple on the inside of the rim, you can easily grind them down a little.

The small 16" Sun CR18 rims although very nice are a nightmare to MP tyres on. It can be done with lots of practice but its so easy to damage the wire beading covering and expose the wire which then rubs on the inner tube over time and gives you a slow puncture. SJS use to do blank Brompton rims which you could re-drill to 36h alas the ones they have are only 28h now which is of little use with our hubs which are almost always 36h.

Thanks Jerry. It may come as no surprise to learn that I have chickened out of the wheel build and have shipped the hub to SJS who said they have done a few and were happy to take it on. Which makes two of us!

Hi Folks,

Not wishing to hijack a thread with a post that may sound rather like an ad, but a number of members seem to have problems finding either spokes or a builder for e-wheels.

I run a wheel building business that specializes in IGH and motor hub wheels.
We have a Morizumi spoke cutting and threading machine so can supply DT Swiss 13g and 14g spokes down to 80mm length in any quantity - even one:)
Our current 13g nipples have the same external diameter as std 14g to avoid problems with normal rims.

If I can help anyone with spoke or wheelbuilding problems please contact me. Located on the Essex UK coast, not the US!

I'd definitely be interested in details and though it might not be immediate some of my friends want e-bikes for delivering locally produced food, and what we will definitely need are more folk skilled in wheelbuilding for these...

which coast are you on? nearer my way (Frinton/Walton on the Naze) or nearer to London?

Hi again,

Thanks for the warm welcome:)
We're in Maldon, on the Essex coast about 10 miles from Chelmsford.
I can be contacted via: just1bike[at]gmail.com Skype name: catsnapper
if you prefer phone contact, mail me your number and I'll get back to you.

I'll update the e-wheel services and guide prices on our blog/website tomorrow and post the link on here. The site was hijacked for a short while yesterday, so it was wiped and is being rebuilt.

We also stock a small number of motors, mainly Bafang with an occasional Tongxin, to enable us to offer replacement wheels, but we don't offer kits - we leave that to the guys that you all know so well!

Anything else you might want to know, please ask.

The Tongxin's would be most welcome especially to be able to source from a supplier in the UK :D
