Ireland with a population of 4.83 Million are carrying out 5000 tests per day. The UK with a population of 66.44 Million are carrying out 7500 tests per day.

The ineptitude of not even realising someone might ask "What reagent?", not having an answer, and making it look ever more like infinite numbers of monkeys making up excuses on typewriters.

That so much then quotes "reagent" as if it is a specific something. Rather than a blanket term for chemical compounds used in certain ways. As if you go to Amazon, or eBay, or AliExpress and search for "reagent". Or can ask the UK chemical industry for however many litres of "reagent".

A reagent /riˈeɪdʒənt/ is a substance or compound added to a system to cause a chemical reaction, or added to test if a reaction occurs.

For many chemical activities, water is classified as a reagent!. However I do suspect they are referring to specific proteins used as coagulants

The excuse regarding reagents made by Gove yesterday has been exposed as a lie by Robert Peston. He has discovered from a very credible source that these substances are not in short supply.

NHS Management have proven themselves to be so poor, so inept and so unsuitable for the jobs they are employed to do, that that have resorted to bullying and threatening their staff. Threatening staff with the sack if they dare to speak the truth. Good grief!

Wantonly threatening active medical staff with the sack should be one of the few reasons to sack medical staff (including managers) at present.

But why so unprepared as to not have more information available? Appears unable to predict even the most obvious questions.

I have seen mention already of the availability of vast quantities of ethanol and substantial amounts of isopropanol - so unlikely to be them. (Though they might only be available in industrial specifications rather than Ph Eur.) Why, even I have plenty of isopropanol and glycerol. :)

But, if specialist substances, why not let us all know and we could look at the backs of our cupboards? Well, university and industrial/pharmaceutical outfits could do so. Much faster to get journos to print the info. and wait for responses than ringing the possibly hundreds or thousands of places that just might be able to help.

excellent explainer:

Germany has 174 labs that test for CV, we have 12.
Our CMO and CSO have become Cummings drones.

Gove was blatantly telling lies at yesterday’s briefing.

Robert Peston has spoken to the British chemical industry body. They have contacted all British chemical suppliers and manufacturers. There is no shortage of any chemical/ reagent required for Coronavirus testing kits. There is plenty and they can easily increase production if asked. They have contacted Gove’s office to find out why the hell he is saying these things.

The chemical industry are also saying they had a meeting with the Industry Minister last week and the government didn’t even raise the subject of Coronavirus testing! Wankers.

Given the personal stakes that everyone has, including those in the chemical industry, I strongly suspect they are being honest and truthful - and would do almost anything to produce more of whatever reagent(s) are required.

Putin has shown himself rather more adept than many other dictators politicians:

Coronavirus: Russia sends plane full of medical supplies to US

Critics likely to claim Moscow will exploit goodwill gesture as public relations coup

It ends:

The UK’s approach to testing may be proven right — we just don’t know. But it has taken a different path to most.

I am not at all convinced that our approach is sensible.

Or Sweden’s. They seem to be just letting nature take its course. No measures whatsoever. I guess the body bags will tell us who’s right.

on pure economic ground, possibly.

One could argue that our strategy will accelerate the acquisition of 'herd immunity' among the young people but it will kill a lot more people compared to the result in Germany.
In Germany, they hospitalise only 6% of their cases, in the UK, 50% are hospitalised.
We have many more beds occupied by CV patients than they do, so I can't see how our strategy is better.
On humanity ground, it can't be right.
It's better that we try to keep the oldies alive and fail instead of let them die without trying our best just to save some money.
In any case, the potential savings are small beer compared to what we lose everyday the lockdown is longer than strictly necessary. Without extensive testing among the young people, we have a lot more silent spreaders.

  • The prime minister’s spokesman also said:

  • There is a global shortage of the specialist chemicals for testing, contrary to claims by the British Chemicals Association
Again, identify what compounds are suffering shortages! Then we just possibly might believe the PM and his spokesman. Until then, I'd rather back the BCA.

According to reports, Ireland has tested 30,000 by yesterday ,and is increasing the number of drive in centres .. including one at my local college ,the plan is to ramp to 10k per day using 45 centres. So in fairness I don't think we are at 5k per day yet.
However with 3k confirmed cases, 90% of the tests confirm no current infection.
Unfortunately not all nursing staff are getting tested as much or often as required.

In the Daily Mirro
"
Just 30 of the new coronavirus ventilators trumped by ministers will be ready for the NHS next week, the government admitted today.

Michael Gove last night announced "the first of thousands of new ventilator devices will roll off the production line" this weekend, and "be delivered to the NHS next week."

The safest course is to assume any decision being made is the wrong one, so far this view has a 100% track record

It's not only about money though, there's the shortage of resources which money can't immediately magic up in sufficient quality, such as hospital capacity, ambulances, medical staff, intensive care beds, ventilators, face masks etc. I don't want any of those scarce resources spent on 84 year old me instead of younger people if I contract the virus. Therefore if I contract it I'm DNR and will instruct accordingly.

In very difficult circumstances I see nothing wrong in the old dying before the young to benefit the latter.

Can we have Aldi as our government? :)

Discount supermarket Aldi is donating almost half a million surplus Easter eggs to charities and food banks across the UK.
From Thursday, Aldi will provide up to 50 Easter eggs per store each day to local charities and food banks which support vulnerable families and children.
The donations form part of Aldi’s ongoing partnership with community engagement platform, Neighbourly, which sees all 877 Aldi stores in the UK donate food to local charities and community groups at the end of each day.
