Watching videos of bikes using throttles going uphill with crank drive, why am I hearing multiple clunks and clicks, whereas a the hub bike on the same hill is pretty smooth and quiet.

Listen at about three quarters into this short video.

the CD kit in your video is so crude that it is not a representative of CD motors. Most CD motors are extremely quiet, you can't hear them when riding even on quiet lanes.

this is a video of the Woosh Sirocco CD (2013):

this is a video of the Woosh Krieger (2015)

That video proves nothing of any value. A bigger powered motor goes faster than a smaller powered motor ... surprise!!

From the limited view of that crank motor it looks like a kludge. It looks to be driving the crank via an auxiliary chain. There are therefore two chains in use.
Since the decision was to drive up the hill without using the pedals, the hub bike has only one moving part , the hub , while the other bike has two chains gears and chaineset s all moving.

Also where were the microphones...

I can assure you that the crank drive motors in the Bosch are very quiet and with laittle clicking noises.

more power you can get 7kw hub motors but when you add a massive batt to them it will weigh a ton and be a handful going back down.

id go with a bafang mid drive 750-1000w should do it ;)

Yes, not so much faster but say getting up a hill like your video on throttle alone?
Andy, the throttle is only available on Chinese CD kits like the Bafang BBS01 or BBS02 and Woosh CD bikes.

Right, yes a huge hub bike out of the question for me, when I get back to the uk I'll probably buy two bikes,
1. Put a BPM on a hybrid for town
2. Get a BBSO2 750w or 1k for the farm.
