Ten years apiece
It's basically just vandalism, and while it might have been iconic, its just a tree, no human life was lost or harmed.
Big fine, but prison time ? I dont see it, and TBH if we start jailing people for cutting down A SINGLE tree, where is that going to end.

Not just simple vandalism to the tree, a scheduled ancient monument was damaged in the process which makes it a heritage crime which is considered a more serious offence.

Oh I agree that it was utterly moronic, and nasty thing to do to boot, but i cant see how there is that great a penalty.
And TBH I don't think there should be either, certainly no jail time, though a fine of several thousand seems more appropriate.

Damage to the wall is minimal(about £1K), and while a world heritage site, it is traversed on by thousands of people yearly.

But as to the tree, not sure that constitutes anything but vandalism. Look for example at the oak cut down by the bosses of the Toby Carvery a couple of weeks ago. That was 500 years old, and the extent to any prosecution is going to be limited to none whatsoever, beyond 'er... sorry 'bout that'

It isn't even a native tree, being something of a pest species:

"Sycamore is naturalised in Great Britain, with a poor reputation amongst conservationists due to the perception that it supports only low levels of biodiversity, that it is not native and that it is invasive in ancient semi-natural woodlands."

Who gets the wood? A normal sycamore is worth £2,400 per sq M. That one has provenance that should boost the value significantly. If it goes up for auction, somebody would make a fortune.

Might be a small premium, but it is not worth £2 1/2k cubic meter.

It's about £30/cubic foot(35 cubic feet in a cubic meter.

£600-£800 sounds about right to me. Less for plain, and the top end is highly figured

It's not a furniture wood, its more a turners wood, or in use as handles for brushes, that sort of thing.

Yeah, but thats some mental artisan place, priced to catch the unwary who don't know their 4r5e from their elbow

Trade price of Sycamore is priced as i earlier stated.
eg
This is trade, the type of place i buy my timber from

99% of the time you're buying inch boards(actual thickness 30mm) or 2"(actual thickness 55mmish)
Few if any buy 4" due to the amount lost when processing it.

Even some of these places are a bit steep price wise

it's easy to criticise (I know, I do plenty of that too), but what would you do for electricity besides burning fossil fuels and biomass?

Well thats the crux of it isn't it ?
We have those who see renewables as one big conspiracy, but they can't suggest anything to replace it with.
So much so they then consider the notion of climate change as also being one big conspiracy.

At least produce some peer reviewed scientific evidence Mike. Links to an EV hater hardly constitute hard evidence.
In fact they probably do the opposite.

Song of the wind ?
