  1. Of course the obvious question is, 'why have it delivered to their offices/workshop', surely they could've just as easily had it sent directly to you? Could it be that they're telling lies? Ian
  2. The FedEx man came bearing gifts this afternoon. Jools and I set to and fitted the new battery rack, controller and display, took our time in an effort not to mess up. Getting the new display cable through the tube was a pain and eventually accepted that we were not able to get it to go up the seat stem tube, well hugely surprisingly it worked straight off. Plugged the battery in and powered up the display, check! I'd fitted a simple throttle (thanks for the advice VFR400) and it powered the front wheel, check. Disconnected the throttle and went for muscle power, wow, check. The brakes don't cut the power immediately, but I've figured that one out, I need to splice the two connector from each brake into a single connector, job for tonight, finally the lights don't want to operate, far from a deal breaker. Nipped it outside and gave it a maiden run down and back up the lane to the side of the barn, seems very good, Jools did the same and proclaimed it 'better than before', damned by faint praise! We tidied things up and I decided to give it a go on the road to the next village, up the hill for half mile of constant easy(ish) gradient, it climbs 50m according to Google. I ran out of gear going up it! This amended bike might just be a bit quicker than I anticipated! Sort out the brakes tonight and we'll give it a proper test tomorrow, weather gods willing. My biggest worry is that I'll not be able to keep up now, and no she's not getting the throttle! Thank you all for you assistance and advice, looks like I've saved myself the best part of a grand. More later. Cheers Ian
  3. Yeah, I'll hang fire trying anything until I've got the lot and can install in one go, I have a limited attention span (especially if anything goes wrong) , so best done in one go! Cheers Ian
  4. Hi, My apologies I'd whizzed through your reply without really noting your advice, have now taken it, although I went with a different battery supplier, just waiting on the bits now, I do hope I have bodged the order. Cheers Ian
  5. Right, so I've ordered the controller with display as recommended by VFR400 (cheers fella), assuming that if I just wired up the new (on it's way) 36v battery it'd just fritz the existing controller, will be reporting back in a few days time! Ian
  6. Hi All Sorry, I went a bit quiet on this, I'd convinced myself that Jools needed a new bike and the NCM Milano was going to be the way forward, well guess what, it's out of stock, looks like 'ma belle-soeur' got the last one! So back to updating the existing bike, it appears that 36v and (at least) 12.5Ah is the way forwards , there seem to be quite a few around, so If I can retain the existing motor, then we can keep this bike for a while and move onto a better bike when they become available. Pic below shows the controller, am I able to retain this too and literally just change the battery/housing along with the supply wires? Having now seen the controller it doesn't seem quite so daunting even if I do need to chance the controller, but bearing in mind the motor is uncensored, so, again, which one? Cheers all. Ian.
  7. Two points! 1. He's lying VFR400, he was fat for the first 65 years of his life, give or take, these last few he isn't, he's no lightweight though! 2. Kevin, how come Liz wasn't out on it last night, you or I would have been and soon as the charging light turned off (maybe). Ian
  8. Reminded me of the Python sketch with self ejecting food, I believe that referenced cycling too, I'm sure you must know it? Just realised the size of this thread, I hope this hasn't already been made mention of and I'm just very late to the party? Ian
  9. I was just being mean to my brother, but when I looked into it further, it turns out that there's no Moscow mules available here in France either! Ian
  10. Hi That's where I started, unfortunately I don't seem able to find a direct replacement, I'll need the whole battery box as the existing one is literally falling apart, annoying the very first time I looked I found a replacement at Ali-Baba, can I find it now Cheers
  11. Hi Georgehenry That's good to hear, I suppose that it's all a bit of a lottery, Jools's battery will get us to Mt St Michel and back, that's 32km but as flat a ride as you're ever likely to make, throw an incline at it and it starts acting up, for instance it turns off assistance to advise remaining battery. I had a bit of a ride on it yesterday, it's pretty good when fully charged but the gearing is waaaay too low, something I hadn't realise before and goes some considerable way to explaining why she appears to be so slow to me on the KTM. Cheers Ian
  12. 2xRC36s and a SH300i for me, poor Jools is relegated to a non-running Chinese copy of a Lambretta! Yeah, I thought it a magnetic sensor, pretty neatly done, it looks better thought out than the arrangement on my KTM. Cheers Ian
  13. Yes! I dunno, hell it was over 6 years ago, but if you pressed me I say it was the latter.
  14. Couldn't tell you exactly but I received notification of one just weeks after I'd bought the bike, back in late '15, I was working lots at the time so I didn't get around to taking it back to the dealer, he was based in Hampton Wick, just off Kingston Bridge at the junction of High St and Park Rd, I believe it's now Sigma Sports. I'm pretty sure I read of another on the Bosh website but there again I may have dreamt that one . So, sorry I can't give you anything concrete. Cheers Ian
  15. Hi VFR400 Is that NC21, 24, 30 or 35? Jools used to have an NC24 until I used it for my commute for 18 months I need to sit down and get my head around all this, my knowledge of electrics is way too poor and I need to improve it! Thank you so much for taking the time to set out your thoughts/advice, I'll check out the links, in the interim here's the bottom bracket, I'm pretty sure it's a magnetic sensor? Got to go in for my tea now! Cheers Ian
  16. Hi Scorpio Yes, I read your thread when you'd responded to my 'Software upgrade' thread, very informative and entertaining, just typing this to you whilst my brain turns over what VFR400 is saying below! I think doctoring the 24v system will be a waste of time, that's clearly borne out by your experience, 36v is the way forward Cheers Ian
  17. Cheers Andy Thank you for taking the time to reply. I did negotiate believing it to be a 5 yo bike, his receipt bore that out, it's only when I looked closer once home that I discovered it had obviously lain unloved in a supermarket storeroom for a further 5 years (going on the date on the battery), I didn't pay so much that I'll be out of pocket. Just want to get it so Jools can keep up and I can keep warm Cheers Ian
  18. Hi All I started a thread entitled 'Software updates' but then took it off topic to discuss my other half's bike (half's or halves ). Looks like we've fallen into the oft fallen into mistake of buying second hand and ending up with a dodgy battery, well, lets say less than perfect. The bike is a supermarket (French) special, probably 10 years old, 250W front hub motor with a 24v 10hA battery. The main difficulty is that the battery start giving problems as soon as Jools start to climb a hill, and frankly she's really slow (not 'cos I'm so athletic, my Mecina cross 9 is!). I'm just about convinced that instead of a direct battery replacement, I go with a new 36v system (battery, controller, display and wiring) but retaining the motor, but which one? Bike battery , motor and motor connections shown below, I've only just taken notice of the info on the motor, I see it's a Bafang (they're OK aren't they) but it's a puny 180W, maybe I should look to replace that too? All thoughts/suggestion most appreciated Ian
  19. One bit of advice I will give bruv, don't look to Alice's thread (Ceilco "Which conversion kit") for any help, it seems to have grown legs!
  20. Hi I'm no expert but I agree, you appear to have found your problem Cheers Ian
  21. Hi Benjahmin Firstly, thank you so much for you assistance, there are markings on the motor, I'll photograph them later. I reckoned it was a pretty basic job, but if it really is 10 years old it's not too surprising and it is a budget supermarket jobbie! I'll start an new thread, this has rather run off topic Cheers Ian
  22. Hi All Photos, Bike, battery connections and motor connections, again any and all help is so much appreciated. I reckon the bike is a pretty generic design , Chinese built and sold under many and varied names? Cheers Ian
  23. Hi Benjahmin Top explanation, I'm impressed at how quickly you assessed my level of 'expertise' , cheers. I'm sure the controller is in the ali box attached to the battery on the rack, photos to follow shortly. Cheers Ian
  24. Hi VFR400 Thanks for the advise, are we likely to know one another from other sites, VFR forum - Bikers Oracle or Grebike400, there I'd be known as Ian Daly? Cheers Ian
