September 7, 201411 yr Ok, today was the Glasgow to Edinburgh run with 'pedal for Scotland' I wasn't doing the run but had arranged to meet a young chap and his sister when they reached the halfway point which is close to my home. Now, there was a reason we'd set up this meeting. He'd recently beat a Strava time of mine and we'd decided to see who was best. We met up and headed into Linlithgow and stopped at the feeding station. It was here I decided that cheating might be my best bet. So, while he and his sister were off getting some food I took of my speed cut out. So, we set off. Now, before we get to the strava segment there's a shorter hill which starts from a set of traffic lights under the railway bridge. I'd been keeping the power turned down up until this point but went to level 5 as we stopped at the lights. There were dozens of bikes at the lights and as they went to green we went under the bridge. As it was crowded we were slow at first, once clear of the bridge the 'proper' cyclists started jockeying for position. I was getting impatient and decide to give the Typhoon its head. I went wide and said in a loud voice. "Come on youngster, it's not even a real hill" the Typhoon took off up the hill and left everyone way behind. When I got clear I looked back, no-one was catching me so I slowed so my two friends could catch me. As he caught up he laughed and said, "you've been rumbled" when I had shot off a couple of 'proper cyclists' had tried to come after me.one said to the other. "He MUST be on an electric bike. So I left it without the cut off speed for the next 12 miles. It's childish I know but hey! As to our challenge, it was a dead heat on strava, which, considering I had got rid of the cut off speed meant he did very well. Having no cut off speed for 12 miles or so wasn't too heavy on the battery I did 26 miles before I changed it and it wasn't dead at that point but I thought I'd give it a break. No doubt someone will now post telling me I'm a major criminal.
September 8, 201411 yr No doubt someone will now post telling me I'm a major criminal. At one time for your crime you could have been transported to Australia, and there they had a very strict 200 watt limit. That would teach you! We can't do that any more, they've changed the limit to 250 watts. .
September 8, 201411 yr Author At one time for your crime you could have been transported to Australia, and there they had a very strict 200 watt limit. That would teach you! We can't do that any more, they've changed the limit to 250 watts. . I suppose that means that Australia now sends their illegal ebike riders to us.
September 8, 201411 yr Messing with people on Strava is one of the pleasures of riding an ebike I did feel a little guilty when one guy who I poached a Strava segment off commented he'd had a bit of a "heart moment" when trying to get it back!
September 8, 201411 yr http://www.strava.com/dashboard I have a couple of King of the Mountain records around here. No one has sussed me out yet though;)
September 8, 201411 yr Just had a brainwaveo_O Why not start a Strava club for electric bikes!!! So I have done just that and you can join via the link below http://www.strava.com/clubs/108312 I shall start a new thread for this. Bob
September 9, 201411 yr Still none the wiser as to what strava actually is. Think 'virtual time trials' crossed with social networking and you're pretty much there.
September 9, 201411 yr Still none the wiser as to what strava actually is. Here's an explanation I found online, it's definitely not for me! What is Strava? Currently focused on the needs of avid cyclists and runners, Strava lets you track your rides and runs via your iPhone, Android or dedicated GPS device to analyze and quantify your performance. Strava makes fitness a social experience, providing motivation and camaraderie even if you’re exercising alone. Strava grew out of our own needs as athletes. With busy lives requiring much solo training, we missed the sense of camaraderie and friendly competition that drove us to achieve our best through training with others. Today, Strava lets athletes all over the world experience social fitness—sharing, comparing and competing with each other's personal fitness data via mobile and online apps. .
September 9, 201411 yr Author Still none the wiser as to what strava actually is. It's on Strava.com If you join it you can either record your rides on the strava app on a smartphone or use a Garmin GPS then send the tracking of your run to Strava. When you then look at your run on there, you will see that others have been on the same bits of road as you, known as segments, you will see how good or bad your time is. You can then seek to improve your times and fitness. Of course, when someone you know also joins Strava, it becomes more competitive and then the fun/fighting begins. Using an ebike on it doesn't guarantee you will be the fastest on a particular segment. The challenge I mentioned at the start of the thread, the young man an myself are a dead heat on it. If we click it so we only see those we are following, it shows us as 1st equal. If we click it to show everyone who has ridden that bit of road, we're a few mph behind the leaders. Hope this helps explain it.
September 9, 201411 yr Author Jimod Are people on ebikes not " PROPER CYCLISTS " I ALWAYS CYCLE PROPERLY:D I cycle properly too, it's those loonies on bikes with no battery who are not right.
September 9, 201411 yr Strava for utility cyclists who use their bikes as general transport: Me: "How long does it take you to get to Sainsburys?" Response: "Dunno mate, I shop at Tesco." .
September 9, 201411 yr Y I cycle properly too, it's those loonies on bikes with no battery who are not right. You are a very naughty boy. Let's hope you are not caught. I am not a proper cyclist having one big and one small wheel. And I am not currently using electric power assist. But I go faster than some, just joined the club to keep an eye on everyone But now they can confirm I go a bit fast at times. But no assist so not speeding honest officer
