fordulike,do you use your middrive on the road if so do you have it set to cut off at 14.5 mph,or do you just ride on trails

I ride a very small section of back roads, but no more than half a mile in length and I don't purposely limit the speed, although I do take it at a leisurely pace.

Mostly back lanes, gravel paths and dirt tracks for me.

I built this bike for torque, rather than outright speed.

I do not limit the speed as well or should I,I have been riding on quiet roads on days and on busy roads at night, i enjoy the torque of mid drive as well as the speed,i like to pedal hard and and fast on the climbs to give the motor some support, while reading many posts again,I am thinking should i continue riding my bike on the roads with derestricted speed,or perhaps I should stick to gravel paths and cycle lane for now

Unfortunately, I cannot make those choices for you. If you were to be involved in an incident with a vehicle, then it wouldn't matter what PAS mode or throttle level you are riding.

We all know what we are talking about without going into a debate. I get really tired of those threads nowadays. Me and SpezElec are both grown men... Most of the time ;)

My riding habits minimize risks to a low level, but they are still there. It's a risk I am prepared to take for a hobby that I really really enjoy.

Can I ask why you think gravel paths and cycle lanes are any different to the road?

And the road doesn't have families with young children and dogs wandering along them:)

The roads round here do,and lots of horses too.

My bike does 34mph tops but as soon as I see someone else I slow right down and,in the case of coming up behind horses I always shout out a warning to let them know I am there.

A bit of commonsense goes a long way towards keeping everyone safe.

Kinninvie is right on the button about common sense.

Far too many idiots around, riding without helmets, pulling wheelies as far as they can go, riding no handed, no lights at dusk and night, curb hopping from pavement to road and dangerously back again in heavy traffic, thinking traffic lights don't apply to bikes.

I could go on, but I think it's safe to say us pedelecers have more common sense than most.

Unless yer name's soundwave of course :p

Only kiddin soundwave, we luvs ya really ;)

Obviously roads are for bikes, cars, lorry etc and cycle path bikes, runners, horses etc, road are smooth mostly and cycle paths and gravel paths a playground for most of us,cyclist

seeing a lot more mobility scooters now tho ;) even 1 going of road lol, well on the grass ;)

Passed a mobility scooter this afternoon on National cycle route 14 going over Howgill viaduct. Its over a mile from a paved road!

I wasn't aware you had to be selling conversion kits to post in this forum... do you sell them?

I asked a specific question because I'm interested to know the answer, that's all.

you should have gone with "no", it works better I think (you may well have inadvertently caused the forum to have another twenty page repetitive thread as a result of not doing so) anyway, I'm with Douglas Bader http://genius.com/4134756

on this and get where you're coming form

For those who have plunged into this thread at the deep end and wonder what the original topic was all about ;)

Many months ago, a seller of electric bike conversion kits, conveniently named ' Electric Bike Conversions ', was mentioned on this forum:

Electric Bike Conversions

They were fairly new to the game, so didn't have much to go on concerning the quality of their kits or customer service.

Fast forward to now, and after looking at their feedback within the last few months, appear to be one to put on the short list for high quality kits at a good price.

They've got a few fully built bikes on there too, if kits aren't your cup of tea ;)

Would the 500W motor affect the range of the bike, i.e. would it potentially have a shorter range on the supplied battery than the 250W motor, or is it just a matter of potential reserve power in the bigger motor?

Forget about whether it is a 250w or 500w motor. You need to find out what the controller is rated at.

A 15 amp controller will still draw the same power from a battery, whether it is hooked up to a 250 watt motor or a 500 watt motor. So the range will be the same.

The difference is, that you usually find the higher wattage motors are mated to a higher current rated controller.

I had to make a decision, eBay had a 20% discount voucher tonight which terminated at 22.00, so I went for the 500W Kit. I'll report back on it's performance here.

I doubt you'll be disappointed with your choice.

You can't argue with a 20% discount.. Enjoy your new kit when it arrives ;)

There were conditions -> 20% off any purchases over £20 up to a maximum of £50, so I got £50 off the £395 Kit, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.:)

Lol, that's true.

If you need any advice on fitting the kit, don't be afraid to ask.

There's members on this forum that eat, sleep and breathe electric bike kits :p

Thanks for the help. I'm fitting the kit to a bike i know I can pedal up most hills around here, it has a 22inch bottom gear, the advantage is I know I can handle a 30lb load easily on it and that I can get home if the motorised system fails. Most of the ready made bikes I researched have too high a gearing to be useful.
