May 7, 20188 yr well what a crap start to the bank holiday. Got the bike out yesterday to enjoy the sunshine and bang my chain got stuck somehow and and got stuck in the derailleur and snapped it off. On the bike is a shimano RD-M675 SLX 10 speed, can't seem to find this model at many places I thinks it's because it's a older model now, Does anyone know if a SLX M7000 10 speed will fit or is there is any other shimano models I can look at? Thanks for any advice. Steve.

May 7, 20188 yr All ten speed ones will work I’ve mixed and matched many different types and even speeds over the years Just get a reasonable quality one they don’t wear out so quickly Unless they get snapped off of course
May 7, 20188 yr id check the mech hanger as well for damage as if it is bent even a tiny bit you will never get the gears to index right.
May 7, 20188 yr I'm a bit confused. Why do you need a new derailleur? Surely it is just the hanger that has snapped. . Edited May 7, 20188 yr by EddiePJ
May 7, 20188 yr i hope that mech hanger is a normal one otherwise it could be a pita to find a replacement.
May 7, 20188 yr Author Thanks guys a got a new one off eBay for £35.00 all in and it's the same one. Not sure what you mean by the hanger, soundwave.
May 7, 20188 yr Author Thanks soundwave I take it the top one is all ok and the other one is bent Best have a look at my one tomorrow just to make sure
May 7, 20188 yr no it was bent and twisted and the thread was knackered new one is the top one,£23 quid Edited May 7, 20188 yr by soundwave
May 8, 20188 yr Author Soundwave Got the hanger off today just to make sure it was ok, and I think I'm in luck so just have to wait now for the postman to turn up with my new derailleur.
May 8, 20188 yr A slight bend - all but invisible to the naked eye - in the hanger can cause shifting problems. You may be OK, but if you have trouble indexing the gears with the new derailer it's worth changing the hanger rather than struggling for ages with the existing one.
May 8, 20188 yr when you fit the new mech make sure there is some locktight blue on the thread, it might come with some on but might not.
May 8, 20188 yr Author Ok soundwave I have to get a new gear cable so I will pick some up at the same time, I did see there was some on the hanger and the only kind I have is the red one and I'm sure it's from the pound shop
May 8, 20188 yr A £70 alignment tool would ensure you are on the straight and narrow. Too much for most home mechanics, and not all bike shop workshops have them. But a lot of niggly gear indexing/jumping problems are eventually traced to a bent hanger. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/park-tool-derailleur-hanger-alignment-gauge-2-2/rp-prod149800
May 8, 20188 yr different colors mean different strength red being very strong and would also need heat to remove the bolt so best not use that on a mech. also b4 you fit the new cable give the cable hose a good blast with some wd40 so it can not get snagged or replace the hole thing if not a pita.
May 8, 20188 yr Steve, you might find the following thread useful to you. http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/thought-id-broken-my-frame.30067/ .
May 8, 20188 yr i think rather than paying 40-80 quid for a tool and then using it to bend it back in to shape the cheapest option is just to buy a new mech hanger. as they are meant to brake rather then snap the mech in half but id be surprised if it also had no damage but i guess we will find out when indexing the gears as mine was bent and twisted to the point the thread was unusable so a tool would have been useless anyway. up side is hardly any chain noise now crisp up and down shifts with the b screw set right with the sag. down side is it cost £300 as i changed the hole group set to eagle 12spd gx
May 10, 20188 yr i think rather than paying 40-80 quid for a tool and then using it to bend it back in to shape the cheapest option is just to buy a new mech hanger. My opinion is the opposite. I use the tool at least once a month. With the terrain that I ride, having branches/twigs flick up and jam and bend things is an inevitable thing, and being able to quickly and accurately straighten and true the hanger is essential to me. My only regret is not having bought the tool years ago. I also never ride without carrying spare hanger, but don't recall ever having snapped one. Though the lad that I often ride with broke two in the space of two rides. I did feel for him, given that it was over £50.00 in thrown away money. The second time that it broke, it also cost him a new chain.
May 10, 20188 yr not sure even bending mine back to shape would be a good idea as it is part of the frame and the rear axle also goes through it.
May 13, 20188 yr Author Bike all back together and all looks good so far, had a ride around the garden with no problems so looks like the hanger is ok, will put it to the test today on a ride in the wood.
