Great safety signs from Northumberland county council. Any other councils doing anything like it?

We had similar space for cycling campaigns in London in the 1990s, but not with road signs. It was with full page adverts on all London newspapers and on London's TV channels.

All reminders help, and the asking for co-operation is welcome, much better than threats of fines etc that just get people's backs up.

Hopefully drivers wont crash into bicycles while they are reading the signs. :(

Good. Main thing wrong is that it says 30 rather than 20.

These are on the rural roads in a variety of speed limit zones, all the way from 30 to unrestricted.

I've just passed through the county in a day, so I don't know if there is any supporting advertising through other channels.

I like the size, prominence and them being right there in front of all road users.

Have you tried the A68 with your solar setup yet? Maybe they'll need signs that low flying cars should give at least 1.5 m headroom.

The fact that drivers need to be instructed to follow the new guidelines has me with a raised eyebrow. I know it would be virtually impossible to implement but literally we need to go Dutch and no not on date night, cycling infrastructure needs changing, smoother roads, access to better cycle paths etc. When I learnt to drive my instructor told me to give cyclist enough room to fall off & if you can't don't pass; what ever happen to common sense?

Recently returned from Snodonia. Perhaps surprisingly, the road from Beddgelert up to the Lanberis pass was similarly marked.

The road down to Capel Curig was wider and straighter and didn't seem to need them.

On the whole drivers seem fine. There are always those who misjudge things and those who are impatient.

Then there are the idiots who think only of themselves and balatantly disregard any laws, advices or requirements that run counter to their instantaneous wishes. Thankfully they are the minority. It is for these that camera's are useful. I'm tempted to say, that when caught, a mandatory education course should be applied. But education only works on those who want to learn so no point really. So we're back to the 'smack' which, as Flecc has pointed out elsewhere, never really works especially on anti-social idiots. This leads one's thoughts to the nightmare scenario of enforced re-education. Totalitarian state anyone?

I think, just like some other recent thing:rolleyes:, we're going to have to learn to live with it.

True, but it will get continuously better as cycling numbers increase. That's certainly been our experience in London, and the more recent Covid increase in cycling in my southern home counties has also brought about more consideration for cyclists.

increase in cycling

with petrol prices the way they are at the moment, those who can will try and cycle more until winter creeps in but I fear incidents will also increase as the temps rise.

Yes, the increase in cycling has to be consistent and year round to maintain awareness. It's difficult for me to judge for elsewhere since I'm in the cycling and pedestrian intensive area of London and immediate surroundings. Where there's huge numbers of cyclists year round as here and in Cambridge and to some extent in York, driver and cyclist conduct is usually best.

It's only locals who will understand the reference, but it amused me;-)

Never been on it, video below, but I know other similar switchbacks;
