July 10, 20232 yr I was all excited looking at the Yose batteries as per the link... and there on Amazon as a good option. Lots of people indicating in the reviews and answers they work perfectly with the Pendleton Somerby. However I could not understand looking at the images how they would fit / connect comparing it to the battery I have. It is then I discovered, as someone has rightly indicated on here, that the Pendleton bikes had a redesign of the battery / connector and changed it in 2019. Those Yose batteries will be great, I'm sure, for anything post 2019 but the rest of us will not find it easy to get one. Mmm. The Yose link I gave in post #2 HERE is for a pre-2019 Pendleton battery, and HERE is a Yose link for the post-2019 Pendleton battery (sleeved version). Both styles are commonly used by many bike makers throughout Europe.; neither design is exclusive to Halfords or their Pendleton Somerby. On the other hand, it's not too difficult to change the rack/battery for something completely different: AFAIK it's only a basic 36v +/- rail and the smarts (comms) aren't used.
July 10, 20232 yr Even if you get the battery off, I fear you will be challenged finding a replacement. Halfords do not stock them and when I speak to them they say keep checking there web site as they will come back into stock, but I do not believe that. Frustrating in that it seems all it would need is a small adapter to remap the proprietary connector layout to make it work, even some 'heath robinson' wiring and cable ties might be worth trying? Unless anyone else knows, the only option seems a high risk 2nd hand purchase on eBay which likely won't charge or have reduced usage or have it rebuilt as a battery service which is being advertised on eBay but wary to know the quality of these and interested if anyone has used them. PENDLETON Somerby electric bike BATTERY SERVICE UP GRADE | eBay That's all correct if you're incsapable of soldering two wires.

I was going down the root of replacing the rack as you suggested but this is perfect. Interestingly I have been searching the Yosepower.co.uk site and it does not feature on there. Your link is to there .com site where they have it. Just hope I can order and have delivered to the UK which seems fine. Thank you once again, you have saved a lot of frustration and cost.
July 11, 20232 yr Thank you for this and to all other members for helping me come up with a solution - it looks like I will need to invest in a new e-bike and perhaps use the Somerby as a manual bike when I take the battery off. Thanks for your efforts! Ignore my previous response, look at the link to the Yosepower.com site, it appears they have it there, assuming you can get your battery off and discover it is pre 2019.

Depending on the outcome of me short circuiting my battery, a new one may be needed, indeed, I may get a second battery whatever the outcome.......the thing is my Pendleton says on the frame that it is a 2018 model, however it would seem that option TWO is the battery I want.......it appears to be identical, and has all the correct dimensions.......maybe mine was a late 2018 model ?.......

AFAIK the change happened when the EU raised the charges levied on ready-assembled e-bikes imported from China. My assumption is that it was at that point Halfords changed making their e-bikes in China to Eastern Europe to avoid those protectionist taxes (It was suspected that the Chinese Govt were subsidising e-bike manufacture thus making EU bike makers prices look stupidly uncompetitive/expensive); many e-bike makers changed their country of manufacture at that time. Clearly there will be a transitory period between clearing older Chinese made stock to that of Eastern European manufacture, and supplies may even have overlapped. It says in the back of your handbook where your bike was made. AFAIK Chinese bikes used the Phylion branded Joycube battery (old style), Czech ones Battle (new style). The label on your battery should tell you who made it. The Yose ones are copies not original, but there are many members here who have bought Yose batteries over the years and have been delighted with them. EDIT: From the manual: Later model with later Battle battery, Czech made by Pony: Edited July 11, 20232 yr by cyclebuddy
July 11, 20232 yr It says on the bottom of my battery.....Model : Demeter Spec : 8.7Ah/36V DC 313.2Wh .......there is also a barcode with the number D226718 C300CE1
July 11, 20232 yr It's quite possible they were made in various other countries too - like Vietnam or Cambodia. The point is, production was moved out of China AFAIK to avoid the levies. Up until that point they used the Phylion SF-03 battery, and the newer Czech ones (the ones I've seen) the Battle style, and that change happened around 2018/19. Note the reference to Battle here:

Sorry to stretch my luck here, but complete lack of knowledge on this. This battery looks ideal, however it says Standard BMS(not smart) and shows a picture with a big Red X matching the image of the original pre 2019 battery with the connectors and a sticker saying smart BMS. Does this matter? Is it safe anyway with standard BMS?
July 11, 20232 yr All Phylion batteries were supplied with either a Smart BMS or a Standard one. Halfords had a habit of using the Smart version even though their bikes didn't use those connections (Halfords used the ports in store only to check battery usage - see the pasted comment above). My understanding is it doesn't matter with your bike. If you want to be doubly sure, open the dock on your bike and see if those connections are wired to anything (pretty sure they're not, but I could be wrong with so many versions over the years). Others here (different Halfords bikes with Phylion "Smart BMS" batteries, replaced by a Yose equivalent) say those connections are not used/needed by the bike.
November 17, 20241 yr Guys, I bought this not working second hand bike today for £100, apparently only needs a new battery to be the e-bike again. The battery that came with the bike was dismantled, see first photo but I managed to put it up together photo 2 and 3. Photo 4 and 5 is of the bike battery rack. I have hoped the replacement will cost max £200 but it is much more on ebuy its double that allbatteries a bit cheaper yosepower its best (cost €204) however they won't ship to UK, I could ship it to Poland (I am from there and all my family stays there) for £183.79 altogether however I have no idea how to ship it from Poland to UK (I have sent many parcels before from Poland to UK but never a battery) and I believe I would not be allowed to take in on a flight Also I was thinking about sending it somewhere to get fixed I found couple of options on ebay: option 1 and option 2 and found this from ebike repairs so I believe they would be able to fix it too What do you think? Any ideas? Thank you.
November 17, 20241 yr What do you think? Any ideas? Thank you. Looks like a standard Phylion SF-03 version to me. Try this 10.4Ah, includes free shipping to UK - £168 + taxes (added at checkout)... a little more if you need a charger (it looks like a standard barrel plug, not Phylions 5-pin). I also have another query. This bike is going to be for my mum to use and just now it only has the pedal assist mode. Is there any way of adding a throttle to it and upgrading the display? Please see the picture of connections in my bike. photo 1 back of the bike- I believe orange is for the pedal assistance, small black is for brake sensors and display, big black is for the motor. photo 2 in the front of the bike I believe two red are for the break sensors and green for the display photo 3 display and brakes To add the throttle I would need Thumb Throttle Speed Control Finger 1T2 Cable and 3 Pin Gear Shift Sensor BAFANG 3 pin M/F Extension Cable and the new display Electric Bicycle LCD Display Would this work? Thanks Edited November 17, 20241 yr by adamsowy
November 17, 20241 yr What about the 12AH option? its only a few quid more expensive, would that be better option? The higher the capacity the more range you'll get per charge, so it's up to you. You need to see if your existing charger has a compatible plug; if not, it's best to add one to your order for just a couple of quid more. As a general rule, the display isn't likely to be compatible with your controller; generally you need to buy the display and controller as a matched pair. You need to check your existing controller/wiring to see if there's a connection for a throttle, but I think it's unlikely any Halfords bike would be designed to accept one.

You need to check your existing controller/wiring to see if there's a connection for a throttle, but I think it's unlikely any Halfords bike would be designed to accept one. Original wiring has 3 cables: cable 1 has 3 plugs in the front - one green 5pin for display and two red 2pin for brake sensor and the end section is black 6pin into controller cable 2 is yellow 3pin from pedal assistance sensor to yellow 3pin into controller cable 3 is from motor to controller Photo one with existing controller, photo two: 3 cables from controller: 1st to connect motor, 2nd for pedal assistance and 3rd for display brake sensors What I'm thinking is to get this cable to "extend" the single yellow 3pin so I can plug the existing pedal assistance sensor and the new throttle which has a short cable so I need to get this cable to extend because the connection is in the back. What makes me wonder is if adding the throttle to pedal assistant won't cause surge/overload I found this display with 5pin WP plug which is very similar to what I have however I cant find any diagrams for wires. The most important is to add throttle, the display is not necessary. Thank you Edited November 18, 20241 yr by adamsowy
November 18, 20241 yr What about the 12AH option? its only a few quid more expensive, would that be better option? The higher power one will probably have a slightly longer life. Maybe the same number of recharge cycles, so 15% longer life in miles. It might have slightly less voltage sag as well, certainly if it is made with more parallel groups of the same cells as the lower power one.

Getting a throttle to work could be difficult with your existing setup. There is the possibility of some kind of dongle/gadget available that can convert the throttle signal into pas pulses I think. Some one else my know about that. Changing to the KT throttle, controller, cables, display and possible the brake levers is probability a better option. If it was my bike, I would first like to see what needs to be spent before I would buy an expensive battery. The pendleton will accept any 36V so it would be great to check out the existing electrics first. I would also check the bike in general and especially the rear wheel for loose spokes and the rim for wear on the brake surface as from looking at your photo, I cant see a clear wear indicator grove which would show that the rim was not worn. (Sorry if I appear to be a pessimist, but its nice to know what costs lie ahead ) Edited November 18, 20241 yr by Sturmey

November 18, 20241 yr I have a whole step through Pendalton Somerby fully working member price £350.00 collection from London NW2 great battery fully working. The lady I bought it from fell off and never used it again. My wifes bike not sure of the year . cheers baz
November 18, 20241 yr saneagle suggested that this set should be able to take any 36Vbattery so I used my sons motorbike to get the battery out to test Pendleton Somerby and everything works just fine. Took it out to test it (I have never used electric bike before) and I almost killed myself, its so slippery outside and I deduced to use front break, almost ended up being run over by a car
November 18, 20241 yr Last two things 1. I am still in pursuit of the solution for this post: can I add a throttle to this bike without causing a surge or fire? 2. I need a new battery Since we know now that this controller can take any 34v battery i took the housing off the bike and I took it apart to see if someone could suggest a new better one, with a longer lifespan I like this one quite a lot however I have no idea if the cells are good Edited November 18, 20241 yr by adamsowy
November 18, 20241 yr 2. I need a new battery Cheaper (£106 +7 delivery) for 10.4 AH below if it fits. November 19, 20241 yr You really should consider doing the upgrade to KT controller and display as well. It will transform the performance of the bike. You'll also be able to add a throttle:- https://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/pendleton-esomerby-controller-upgrade.38569/#post-572403
