KT controller, KT LCD3 and pass - guide on working modes

I recently replaced the controller and display on my Raleigh Evo with a KT setup. The components I’m using are:

  • KT Controller 36/48V SVPR 7A
  • KT LCD3 Display
  • KT PAS sensor
  • KT Throttle

 

Everything is connected and powers up fine, but I’m seeing some strange behavior, and I’m not sure if it's due to motor configuration or something else.

 

Here’s what’s happening:

  • When I first connect the battery and turn on the display, pressing the throttle works briefly — the motor spins for a few seconds — but then stops responding.
  • If I pedal with the PAS level set to 5, the motor kicks in as expected and runs with me pedalling at the same timie. However, once I stop pedaling, the assistance also stops — and when I start pedaling again, PAS no longer activates. The throttle remains unresponsive all the way.
  • Note battery is showing as full on the display and actually it is full.

 

Has anyone experienced similar issues? Could this be a settings/config issue in the LCD3, or something else entirely? I have set my wheel to 20" but not sure on P1 etc. and C1 etc. I have set as follows:

 

P1=87

P2=1

P3=0 (throttle and pass independently)

P4=1 (throttle when pedalling)

P5 = 7 (36v / 250Wh = just under 7Ah)

 

But completely have no idea on C values

 

Any advice or insight would be appreciated!

First point is normal, depending on throttle and speed settings. If the motor goes over the set speed, it'll cut out. How have you set the throttle - independent, dependent, 6km/hr or what?

 

What speed sensor do you have? What speed is showing on the LCD?

The common default setting I see when new is P4 = 0 and P3=1 which normally gives a full throttle and a 'torque' (simulated) PAS levels/scaling rather than speed. You could change back to these settings in the first instance and start from there and possibly only change one setting at a time when customizing until you get it the way you want.

 

I dont see the controller signal cable (1T4 or 5) on your list. I wonder did that need to be changed?

So I have now changed some settings but motor is not working at all now. 1T4 included. This is what I have:

 

wheel set at 20"; speed at 72km/h

 

P1 =87

P2 =1

P3=1

P4 =0

P5=7

 

C1 =0

C2 =0

C3=5

C4=4

C4=4 50

C5=10

C6=3

C7=1

C8=0

C9 =0

C10= n

C11 =0

C12=4

C13=0

C14=2

C15 =6

Which PAS model is fitted ? This dictates the C1 value.

 

Are brake sensors fitted ? If so disconnect them.

C3 set to 0 or 8 .

C3/5 means PAS will always operate at max current set.

C7 Cruise control turn off so set to 0.

On my bike, for full throttle, P4 is set for 0 and C4 is set for 0 (or also 3). The bike will work with throttle without even fitting a Pas sensor with this setting.

For legal throttle, I set P4 =1 and C4=3 to get walk assist to 6Km/hr and full 'boost' (throttle) when pedaling only but you need a properly set up pedal sensor for this to work. I have those left side mini KT V12 Pas sensors and C1 is set to 7 with Yose Kits and 2 with Pswpower kits (by default) which seems to work OK in both cases.

Any KT issues are setting issues and nearly all issues are associated with incorrect PAS set up's.

 

Personally I have never yet encountered a KT issue in over ten years of using them when setting up.

Neither have I. In most cases, I don't even need to do any settings to at least get the bike working with PAS and throttle; however, I still like to do settings to get it the way I want it. I never use any 12 magnet PAS and I try to avoid the unadjustable waterproof connectors, so that I can at least check that the wiring is correct.

How can you solve the problem if you don't eliminate the possible causes?

Does the PAS red LED blink on/off as the magnets pass the sensor?

With that type of sensor head positioning/cable tieing in place is critical and the sesnor head must align with the magnets perfectly. One also needs to ensurs the gap is 1mm or closer.

C1 & value 07 for the DL 12 pole type , the DL type are handed L or R . If you fit the RH one to the LH then one can try flipping the magnet for correct operation.

P2 will typically be value 01 for most hubs as prettymuch most of them use only one magnet for sensing , however if the odo reads very erratic or well over then it is possible the hub uses six sensing magnets.
It's a waste of time doing anything with the pedal sensor while the throttle isn't working properly. You should disconnect it it until the the throttle is working.

the led is blinking red on/off when pedalling.

let me adjust C1 and P2 and also check on the magnet (it is on the LH as per installation guide)

It's a waste of time doing anything with the pedal sensor while the throttle isn't working properly. You should disconnect it it until the the throttle is working.

hi Saneagle, please note that the bike (raleigh evo) doesn't have a separate speed sensor only padal assistance PAS as it was set that way. Does this mean I need a separate speed sensor for it to set it. I have noticed that when I press throttle just after swiching display on it shows the speed up to 20km/h shortly and then throttle stops working. I can do it twice when pressing on throttle and then it is unresponsive unless I switch the display again

How many watts show on the LCD when the motor goes with the throttle? Which level of assistance are you using? Please give clear and concise answers to questions because it's very difficult to understand what's going on. We don't know what you've done nor what you're seeing. These things really are very simple. I can guarantee that I'd have it sorted in 2 minutes if you brought it to my house.

Yes, the motor runs with the wheel in the air (the bike is currently upside down), but it only lasts for 3–4 seconds, the motor is very loud when using the throttle. When riding, the throttle isn't responsive (unless I switch off and on display again and pedal first than press the throttle).

It sounds like you have a false connection sequence for the motor. If you have the block connectors, like I always recommend, it's easy to fix, but if you have the waterproof sealed connectors, you'll have to hack into a motor cable.

 

Before you do that, what happens if you just use a small amount of throttle with the wheel in the air. Can you maintain an indicated speed of 5 mph? Also, what happens when you use the walk assist (down button)?
