The following ride was off one battery/charge although it did run flat 4 miles from home.(i did need to do this to reset it) Still given the climbing it achieved and against a strong headwind on the return jorney it gave an awesome performance.Anybody with any doubts as to the bike meeting their needs only need to look at the following details.

Remind me what rear sprocket you are using as it cannot be standard with those figures (I know you have the 11t motor sprocket).

 

PS not sure you should be running your heart up to 237bpm!

i have the standard factory fit rear sproket whatever that is.

Ignore the initial heart rate reading,it always seems to give a stupid number for th first half a mile or so,,,,and that is flat or downhill so can't be correct ,it settles down when i get going....even on the one in four ish hills it is 172..max.....

its strange but i always die in the first few hundred yards....on every ride i have done with the garmin.....but whats more satisfying is my average heart rate is dropping despite the hills getting bigger....and this isn't the ghost of carpetbagger speaking

I presume that you are coasting at close to 40 mph then! I doubt you could pedal much over 25 mph on the standard rear sprocket (22t)? Pretty impressive those average speeds as well.

i couldn't do it without my fine steed.......i am definitely fitter since my investment than at any other time in my life......now if only i had a dual drive.....

i was trying to get on your Panasonic web page Flecc but it won't let me on......If i change my rear sprocket to a 18-tooth Hub Gear Sprocket from the standard one would that have the effect of increasing my 7th gear to an 8th and making my lowest gear the equivalent of the current 2nd gear ?

Its just that even on the very steep hills yesterday i managed to drop to 2nd and didn't go lower,,,,just..so really i have liitle use for 1st gear...but having an equivalent of 8th would be more useful..I wouldn't want to make the change if the lowest gear turned out to be higher than the current 2nd gear.

i have now found Tangents gear ratio table,,,so it looks like i need a 21t rear sprocket.My next question is are they standard fit or would i need something specific to a Kalkhoff ?

Thats really neat software does it work with other garmin models and does it also measure your heart rate or do you import it?

I would have thought that it was hardly worth the hassle of the change just to drop down to 21 t? Anyway it is a standard part you can get most places, on-line (Wiggle and SJS etc). I got one reasonably locally. Perhaps 19t would be a good compromise? It would really fly with the 18t and is perhaps a good option if you can get up the hills in the lower gears.

i can gat up most hills but the ones i encountered yesterday did mean i had to use 2nd for th first time ever....if i can help it i don't want that to change too much....if say i went to a 20t would that make a significant difference ? i am quite happry to loose 1st but i can't really afford nuch change in 2nd...

You sent a shopping basket which of course we cannot see. Any shimano Nexus/Alfine rear sprocket should fit. 20 or 19 would be ok I was only thinking that it wasn't worth changing by one tooth only. SJS only seem to have the 16T Shimano Nexus 16T Sprocket which is very extreme.

I have found some here,in reviews somebody has used one for the Nexus 7 so i assume i should be ok

These are all perfect. hub sprockets by Shimano, SRAM and Sturmey Archer are all compatible. I have bought off ebay in the past for less than £5. The only thing to be careful of is to make sure the sprocket is "dished". If not this may cause the chain to rub against your hub.

 

As to the size, assuming you have a 22T now on an 8 spd hub, a 18T would effectively move your current 2nd gear to 1st gear, but changing the sprocket progressively increases the gaps between the gears, so 2nd gear would be higher than your current third gear, etc. See my table for details:

You might need to take a chain link out as well, although probably not if you did not change the chain links when you upgraded the motor sprocket to 11T.

 

I have an 18T on my hub, but this is only a 7 speed one. This puts my 1st gear approximately where your current 3rd gear is. Even so I find I can comfortably climb anything in 1st with the power on. Without the power though I would definitely need a lower gear.

I agree, I would go for a 19T if I had steep hills on my usual routes.

I am sure you will have a lot of fun. With my 18T I can keep pedalling beyond 25mph.

Absolutely CB.

 

There is no doubt that the KK is a great bike as is our Wisper. It would be fantastic to get some data regarding the efficiency hub vs gear drives that is more scientific than that from two (probably bias) riders or manufacturers comparing notes about the bikes in which they have they have heavily invested. We have a switchable torque sensor / cadence sensor coming out on our 2011 bikes, it would be interesting to do the same ride on both settings. It would also be good to get some with and without throttle data.

 

The only problem is as the weather gets cooler the data will be affected.

 

I have read most of your posts and I am sure you would be very straight forward in your findings.
