Sue Gray partygate report 'set to be delayed until police investigation over'

Jessica Elgot

Sue Gray will not publish her inquiry until the Met police have concluded their investigation into alleged criminal activity in Downing Street, according to sources. The Met police confirmed that Gray had handed over her preliminary findings.

A Cabinet Office spokesman said work would continue on the inquiry. “The investigation being carried out by Sue Gray is continuing,” the spokesman said. “There is in ongoing contact with the Metropolitan police service.”

Exactly as I expected, delaying tactics.

By the time it's all concluded the public will have lost interest and be concentrating on something else more important to them.

Like their fuel bills jumping by 50% from the end of March.

I, m not so sure Flecc. Longer delay for report I think the worse it gets for Johnson.

But, I suspect powers that be in Tory party think only leader they have capable of winning election is Johnson. Otherwise, think he'd have gone by now.

How many parties have they had??

A birthday party for PM in middle of lockdown must he height of stupidity. And for what... A piece of cake?? Its ridiculous on every level.

He won't get away with it

Crazy when you think what he has got away with.. Didn't they hang Dick Turpin over theft of a Cockerell??

Out for this with Boris leaves door open for a return tho.. They won't be hanging anybody.. Unless Boris get his way with Cummings.

Oh, and by the way. Sunak attended Birthday party. Rules him out then.

Only the British.

It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings.

Interesting to hear ex Supreme Court judge Lord Sumption entirely support my previously expressed views, that it is very obscure whether the law has been broken.

He's made exactly the same points as I did, that the law only speaks of gatherings and in this case in reference to places of work which are exempt. And he repeats exactly my point about the Covid laws, that they, like all hurried law, are very badly drafted.

He acknowledges that there's no doubt the spirit of the intended law has been breached, but correctly states that in a criminal matter, to be convicted one must actually break the law.

The police won't be making these judgements, it will be passed to a very nervous CPS who will no doubt seek expert opinion such as from masters at the high court. This may well end with a few individuals being issued fixed penalty notices and then the whole fuss fizzling out.

Never write off Boris Johnson, if he does go it will most likely be for political reasons rather than for proving he's broken the law.

The unseating of the piglet looks very very staged and methodical to me. There won't be any burying of what happened - rather more material being strategically uncovered in a timely fashion as it has so far. I have no sympathy with him, but he has clearly pissed off the wrong spads

Yes, definitely a planned hatchet job.

Ironically the newspapers have played a large part, but if he does go he'll probably end up writing for them again, the one job he is actually good at.

All this might well be true, but in the Court of Public Opinion ,when you are explaining , you are losing...and that is where BJ is now.

Public opinion isn't the law.

As I acknowledged, he might have to go for political reasons, but it's far from true yet that he will be found guilty of a crime as many in here seemed to think.

It will be a pity if he is forced out, since his replacement will have over two years to patch things up enough for the inherent Tory English majority to prevail once again. So although a loss for Johnson, that would be a win for this Tory government that is largely just as guilty as Johnson himself, and certainly not deserving of reward.

I get the ethics (hancock rightly resigned for comparatively less serious transgression). But I worry what more putrid faction in the tory party is behind this (and what nefarious plans they have for the unsuspecting, and it must be said thick and frequently manipulated electorate)

Welcome to the club.

Went to bed last night about 23.45. Woke up at 3.10am and then couldn't get to sleep again until some time after 6am. Woke from that second sleep at 9.35am and got up still feeling very tired and still with all the aches and pains of 85 years. At least I didn't suffer the painful tachycardia of six of the previous 16 nights.

I'm long beyond feeling sorry for myself though, it's my fault for taking so much care to avoid fatal accidents all my life.

.

Sometimes after a night of being dragged out of bed several times to assist my wife who is now at the stage of being incontinent and wetting the bed, I give up and go across to my easel and paint whatever is under construction there.

Then empty what is left in the dim dark recesses of my brain, till the next time reality intrudes.

I came one morning to a Eureka moment and realised that being born was actually a fatal accident in slow motion

Beautiful painting OG, especially given such trying circumstances. It's a talent my older brother had but which isn't present in me.

Your last sentence concurs with my view, that the worst thing that ever happens to us is being born alive. That is when all the trouble starts.

My Younger Daughter Kathryn is artistically talented and usually refers to my paintings in the way she did on the phone this morning.

"Hi Dad, are you both OK..how's the latest substance abuse coming along?"

To which I usually respond with something like "You're a credit to your Father wherever he is!"

It looks like I'm being grouped with Soundwave!

Thank you for the compliment, by the way, which reminds me i haven't signed the last twenty plus paintings, which Kathryn assures me was a wise move as that way I can't be held responsible for 'em

Lovely painting OG.

I wish things were different, but I have absolutely no artistic talent:( I can slap emulsion paint on walls and myself though. Does that count?

There are more dreadful fates out there methinks! :D

It was his fuckjar who carried out the ambush:D

Has it really come to this? The Prime Minister was ambushed by a cake:D

Poor old Boris. Go down in history as ending his political career because of a cake.

Churchill survived Gallipoli, Blair started a war, Brown sold family treasure, Thatcher starved a few miners and started a war and we can only imagine what Heath got upto..

A bit like Ed Miliband and his bacon sandwich.

Memo to would be PMs, avoid any food when near cameras.

Boris Johnson:

I apologise. I really did not know it was my birthday. I am furious with myself.

When people started singing Happy Birthday, I thought they were all washing their hands!

Non sequitor time - again:

Kate Osamor (Lab) asks if the PM agreed with the chancellor to write off £4.3bn of fraud.

Of course not, says Johnson. Everyone should be proud of the huge effort made by government to secure PPE and ventilators, he says.
