    eBikes with Integral Battery

There isn't a lot of interchangability, but the freedom of mounting of non-integrated models gives other options and keeps prices down. .

    eBikes with Integral Battery

The Smart has been discontinued. There might still be the odd ones left in Mercedes/Smart car dealerships, but best avoided since spares will not remain available, judging by Mercedes last venture into a similar e-bike. And I agree with the above posters, don't tie yourself into the one...

    Braking procedure ?

My preference always is the motorcycle way, even on rigid fork bikes since weight is still lifted from the rear wheel as soon as the front brake is applied. So lead with the more effective front brake and assist with the rear brake. Of course in very slippery conditions or when banked, go easy...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

No, that's not correct Dave. An existing pedelec from the moment it arrives here is only legal due to the exemption (h) in 168/2013. Fitting a throttle immediately breaches the exemption, making the bike illegal with no possible path to legality with type approval not possible at present. The...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

No, the full original 1983 law that still applies specifies that the label containing the prescribed information must be on the bicycle in a clearly visible and easily read position. The rule is similar to that for tax discs when they existed, that a police officer or other official shouldn't...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

It originated from adopting the essence of Japanese pedelec law decades ago, but throttle introduction has since then always been vigorously opposed by the moped makers, claiming a safety issue involved since the riders not tested, licenced and insured. In truth they just fear loss of sales...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

I meant with throttles fully operating in the way we use them here. Of course if disconnected there should be no problem in mainland Europe. .

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

No it doesn't. I think the first label option is the best for self builds: (a) the name of the manufacturer of the vehicle, (b) the nominal voltage of the battery (as defined in the 1971 British Standard) of the vehicle, and (c) the continuous rated output (as defined in the1971 British...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

I'd say EAPC is ok, since the DfT have clearly stated that they will consider an e-bike with a throttle which otherwise accords with the law to be an EAPC. .

    Hello from Poland!

Thanks Janusz, these are the freewheel pawls and their springs that allow the chainwheel to rotate without dragging the cranks along. Since there have been a number of the Impulse II units that have failed for other reasons, perhaps there'll be somone with one of those with the parts you need...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

Not on the label, but our legal e-bikes are EAPCs and since 1983 always have been in the UK. Our domestic laws don't recognise the term pedelec, it's a European expression. .

    Hello from Poland!

Welcome to the forum Janusz. Unfortunately these crank units don't have internal spares available and repair is by replacement of the whole unit. That's expensive of course, roughly £500 in the UK. They do have a two year warranty, so if your current bike is under that age, take it back and...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

This has been true since the consultation in 2011, when the January 2012 report on that revealed the strength of desire for throttles on UK pedelecs. But the DfT knew then that the requirement for harmonisation with the EU regulations made that impossible for new pedelecs. It still is of...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

This is the bit I don't agree with, simply because it wasn't true. In the decades up to joining the EU we had been increasingly failing in manufacturing and exporting. That led us into financial management by the IMF. So we weren't good at it when not shackled by the EU. And that was when...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

I don't think seriously so though. The most important part of the law with self builds is that they are not subject to type approval, even if all brand new items are used without any prior riding. I think the DfT has mentioned converting existing unpowered bikes in an attempt to avoid the most...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

No, the start has to be a normal bicycle that has been ridden, however briefly. Then an electric assist conversion (including throttle if wished) can be added. Starting with a bicycle that already includes almost all the electrics is far outside the spirit of the law. There's no reasn why a...

News - DfT: Pedal cycles converted to ‘twist and go’ exempt from type approval

In these two cases the throttle can be fitted immediately with the conversion. The law requires the motorised conversion is separate, following the unpowered bike being used first. Since used only constitutes the owner wheeling the bike a foot or two, the whole thing could be virtually one...
