    Cycling in London (again)....

The assist speeds have featured in the CTC forums and many of the commuting types are keen cyclists. Some will also have tried an e-bike, given quite a few London outlets, so I think it's a consideration. Age is definitely a big factor, this forum illustrates it with only 20% under 40. Of the...

    Cycling in London (again)....

You astonish me Axolotl, in the Netherlands as many as 1 on 6 of all bikes sold are e-bikes. Sales are over 300,000 a year to a population of just 22 millions. That's ten times ours to one third of our population On the ground there's something like an e-bike for every eleven men, women and...

    Cycling in London (again)....

Did you notice the cycling speeds though Hatti? Living in a London borough I notice that a high proportion of the commuters race along at 20 mph or even more. That makes a 15 mph assist e-bike worse than an unpowered one, no assist but lots more weight. .

help with a new Go cycle

Then in that particular case the GoCycle could be ideal, assuming that the impractical features will not be a problem and the purchase and running costs afforded. I think you should advise him to first look into what he needs to do to make if ok for his run, such things as fitting lights...

    Liability....

I agree that 250 watts usage is not a problem in the UK and have posted as such earlier, but in legal terms what I have said is absolutely correct. 250 watts remains outside the permitted legal power specified in the only relevant UK law, so there is no legal difference between 250 watts and...

help with a new Go cycle

I knew, but as I said, not practical. The inadequately supported rear mudguard is very vulnerable and although the carrier can carry things on top, the weight is limited and if full size panniers are used, the heels in normal cycling will foul the panniers when pedalling. I've acknowledged the...

If the UK is not up to speed when you try, under present law you will find that S class bike will not be accepted as it is. A huge range of modifications are necessary, but no need to take my word for it, here's a link to a thread where someone has effectively done it already: Creating a faster...

I do love it when someone joins the e-bike world less than a year ago and then presumes to lecture me! Actually Tom, I possibly do know more about e-bike law than anyone else, since I not only know the UK and EU laws, on this subject I also know the Federal law and all the individual state laws...

I do have some documentation, but as I've posted before, I acted for BEBA in the strictest confidence so cannot disclose the traffic police officer by name or the police force involved. I also have no wish to embarrass them. However, since you are a BEBA member, you can simply ask them. David...

Man United Thrashed By MK Dons

Careful suggesting that Pete, you'll be starting world war 3 if you aren't! The original Wimbledon FC supporter club were furious about the move to MK, picketing the Football League HQ and refusing to support the MK team. The fact that the MK team use the Dons name which used to identify the...

I'm afraid you are in denial Tom. As I've stated a police force did commence a prosecution of a 250 watt rated e-bike rider for riding an illegal e-bike which would certainly have succeeded but for the intervention of BEBA. The EAPC regulations were what they were using and that is the only...

Gringo, sometimes the awfulness of something can have a hypnotic fascination. You really must learn to let go early. :D .

Difference in manufacturer speed cutoff points

Typical of 1960s magistrates courts, rubber stamps for the police who used to be very active in their Wolseleys chasing speeders. The old rules about lamp posts less than a certain distance apart automatically indicating a 30 limit were helpful to them in trapping motorists. .

help with a new Go cycle

I didn't ride it, just saw and heard it. It was the original so the motor noise which I'd describe as "buzzy" may have been attended to now. The things I see as impracticalities are no carrier or way of fitting an adequate one, since the foot on rearward pedals will foul panniers on a normal...

    Liability....

Yes, we all do. I've even got a recent example of a judge knowingly seriously breaking the law in more than one way in a single case, purely for reasons of administrative expediency and a paper outcome suitable to the authorities. The defendant facing very serious charges which could have got...

Difference in manufacturer speed cutoff points

The DfT has stated that 10% leeway is allowable, in common with all other UK speed limit control. That results in circa 17 mph being allowable, if not strictly legal. .

But what you say is simply not true Tom, and you are being grossly unfair to members who are being helpful in pointing out the true position and in no way interpreting when they repeat the actual wording of the law. We in the UK are NOT fully signed up to EU legislation, and there is no such...

The law requires that we are all our own lawyers Tom, ignorance of the law being no defence. Since we cannot possibly have or afford a qualified lawyer with us every second of our conciousness to rule on all our diverse activities, the law clearly requires us to act in that capacity throughout...

help with a new Go cycle

Clever and stylish, but hopelessly impractical in so many ways, plus being expensive both to buy and run long term. I don't like the noise it makes either. It's a product before it's time, suited to production in millions at reasonable prices, but that sort of e-bike market may never occur. .

No change of opinion, "some sort of immunity" is just another way of saying waiver* but less correct in your usage, in both cases from police prosecution which I have made clear in my posts on the subject. I have stated that the 200 watts law is unchanged at present but never said that the...
