If drivers wish to voluntarily donate money to the 'government' and it keeps my taxes down or is used to fix up the roads its got to be a good idea. If there was say a 20% collection fee, just a few minutes monitoring in the morning would be a nice little earner.
May 3, 20223 yr As these 20 limits spread maybe everyone will observe them better, but I very much doubt we'll ever see traffic staying strictly at 20 mph. I am a strong supporter of 20mph limits, but I must admit that (on the rare occasions I take a car into our town centre) I often find I have inadvertently let speed creep up well over them; often to nearly 30mph.

One reason is technical, the lower the speed being measured with hand held laser devices, the more inaccurate they become. And of course as mentioned, the police on routine patrols themselves won't observe them. 20 mph is too slow, i.c. cars in general are totally unsuited to maintaining such a slow constant speed, so speed creep sets in as sjpt posted. Oddly though, fully electric cars like my one are very suited to it due to their vastly superior controllability, so in a sense the 20 limits are a bit premature. In twenty and more years when the number of e-cars start to dominate, these slower limits will be more appropriate. .
May 3, 20223 yr I'm probably in the minority in that I do try to observe the 20mph limit. I also think that it is too slow in many cases, but if those are the rules, then I'll try to obey them. I set my cruise control for 22mph which equates to an actual 20mph according to radar speed limit signs / GPS. We have 20mph limits on some really wide roads, with almost no pedestrians or other 'hazards' - seems crazy to me. One of my friends has a sign on the back of his car 'Sorry for driving so close in front of you'.

In London they have the quite neighbourhood roads (ex rat runs) which were blocked by shrubs boxes /make shift barriers etc, to stop vehicular traffic during lockdown to increase safer walking and cycling activities. Now tbh we are out of restrictions and generally it appears the masses have declared covid over, the make shift barriers are being replaced by road signage and detection camera's. Ignoring such no go areas is now an automatic £130 fine if one drives along one.
May 3, 20223 yr It's also possible to have "play streets" anywhere in the country. A Play Street is where a road is closed off to traffic for a few hours on a regular basis. This is so that children can have a safe space to play freely. Play Streets are organised, managed and run by local communities themselves. Applications to have one should be made to one's Council, who offer advice and organise the closure of the road to traffic. Google Play Steet and you'll see how many councils strongly promote them. .

My cars all have automatic gearboxes & can easily maintain a constant speed of 20mph or lower even less than walking pace if necessary. If you drive a car with a manual gearbox selecting the correct gear allows you to drive at any speed required.
May 4, 20223 yr I don't drive anymore, therefore I'd fully support a 15.5mph speed limit in all towns and cities - I expect automatic speed geo-limiting has a high likelihood of being programmed into electric vehicles at some point, and kill switches which can be activated by hotly-pursuing fuzz (and hobbyists, carjackers, muggers, rapists and kidnappers [all at the same time, is unlikely]). If you drive a car with a manual gearbox selecting the correct gear allows you to drive at any speed required. Drive a good fully electric car for any length of time in urban conditions, as I do, and then you'll understand. Yes, you can maintain a steady 20 mph in an i.c. car, but not with remotely the same ease, precision and enjoyment as with an electric car. That's why so few in 20 limit zones keep to that speed. It's not that i.c. car drivers are mostly bad people, it's just that, as sjpt commented, speed creep sets in and they find themselves nearer 30 in no time if they don't constantly pay attention to keeping the speed down. As I commented, in 20 or less years time when there's enough e-cars to dominate and control urban speeds, we'll see much more observance. .

He was taken by Thatcher in the right to buy days, give the plebs & future private landlords a discount, discourage the local council from ploughing that money back into social housing, then move some working class people (my dad) into the upper working class and gift them out of voting Labour ever again, genius really . Then wait till your kids grow up, liberalise the financial system so much that any or most of the stored value becomes increasingly worthless if not used by the state for nursing home costs because you've lived a fairly healthy life. My cynicism aside in all fairness to my Mum & Dad, life gave them lemons and they are happy, I have resided in the fact that my inheritance will get me a holiday in Vegas and not much else I just worry that my sister thinks there will be a massive pot of gold waiting for her retirement plans in Spain, I feel she is sadly mistaken. The current rules, though widely ignored, are that one has to have a suitable driving licence since they are classed as motor vehicles. Accordingly a few have extensively modified personally owned ones them to suit and put theirs through type approval to get them registered and legal as class L1e-A low powered mopeds. So if the police spotted her riding one, even if a hired one, she'd be liable for a further penalty and an increased driving ban. Once transport minister Grant Shapps announces what the new rules for privately owned ones will be, we'll know more. That won't apply yet where you are in N.I. of course, since your laws in this respect are devolved. .

This will be widely reported any moment now. They shouldn't sell any social housing at all! Councils should build enough homes to reduce average UK-wide rents. It certainly doesn't help that so many second, third, fourth etc. houses and lots of commercial property, stand empty.
