Also do the BBC not use spell checkers? As in 'licence' and 'pedalling'. Feeling grumpy pedantic this morning.

Hope I'm not being too pedantic on an early evening, but isn't it "Pedaling" in the USA and "Pedalling" for us here?

Why do you think the charging of an ebike with a solar panel while riding is illegal?

The laws on ebikes make no reference to such a thing as far as I know.

I don't think charging your ebike's battery, using solar panels situated on your ebike is illegal. For some reason I recall the law prohibits charging the ebike battery via another vehicle while in use, in this case a bicycle trailer. When I recall exactly what and where that's stated, I'll post a link.

matthewslack's solar trailer may or may not be illegal, but I wouldn't want a power cable connecting my bike trailer to my bike. On one occasion, when I was gingerly making my way down a gravelly hill path next to a deep ravine with my bike trailer filled with 75kg of water filled plastic bottles, my bike trailer flipped over and my trailer started sliding down the bank towards the side of the ravine with my bike. Fortunately for me, the bottles fell out and the trailer stopped dragging my bike down towards the deep ravine. It was the Homcom folding trailer, it's hitch is not as well designed as my Small Y Carry Freedon hitch (the old hitch version), which disengages at an acute lateral angle. Some sort of automatic quick power cable release and auto power shutoff gizmo of some sort on the solar trailer would be a good idea, I think. Ravines are everywhere sometimes.

Frightening event!

Frightening event!

Yes it was rather concerning, my bike could have ended up smashed and submerged. It's something like a 50ft drop and that part of the ravine is not fenced off, probably because there's a bank before the ravine. Further down that steep bendy gravel path there is a fence, where there's no bank between the path and the ravine. Would be helpful for ebikers with trailers if the entire path was fenced, I should write A Letter to the authorities. I had two of these in the trailer, large enough to not fall out through the trailer sides:

...plus a lot of plastic milk bottles filled with water in a rubble sack, loosely tied at the top. It's a narrow path with a steep bank up left, and bank down to the ravine on the right - I took that bend too close to the bank on the left, which had a big low rock jutting out from the side, which turned the trailer over. The large containers fell out first. Sought trauma counselling and recovered.

You could also more than likely get your collar felt by PC Plod under the all encompassing Constructions and Use Regulations....ie using some contraption looking a bit dodge on the Kings highways and byways!

Possibly. I carry a receipt which states my purchased BBS01B kit is 250W, and an "Attestation of Conformity" certificate from Bafang which states it's EAPC complaint, just in case. Bring on the dumb rozzers. I'll record video of the event with my helmet's jawguard mounted GoPro for everyone here to see.

Show me your shitty bike (;)).

Only the day before yesterday. I found a proper sticker on my bbs01 which gives the power. It is under the chain wheel, stuck on the side of the motor casing. Rotate the crank and look through the slots in the crank chain ring, and you will see it. I have only had my bbs01 since july 2021 and i never saw if before. Definitive proof that it is a 250 watt motor.

The motor also has a serial number beginning with MM ** 250 23 The 250 to me means 250 watts, but i can imagine, having to argue that with some jobsworth. The sticker i just found hidden away solves all that, and so does my shady counterfeit, ebay sticker, because the law is clear that the bike needs a plate or a label bearing other information: manufacturer name, max speed, voltage, motor power, EN****, CE marking....

I also have one of those shady e bay stickers on the bike pretending to be from bafang stating all the compliance requirements: manufacturer name, max speed, voltage, motor power, EN****, CE marking....

So thoughtful of Bafang to situate that sticker in such a conveniently accessible spot! Store a pic on your phone to show dumb rozzers, in case they're blind as well as dumb, or they suffer lower back pain because they're obese and can't bear the agony of stooping to look, or they fear excessively loud and smelly flaulence escaping their disgustingly fat wobbly guts under great pressure through the orificer's orifice closest. What are they feeding these thicko gargantuan rhino rozzers anyway? Prisoners? According to cannibal folklore, eating brains could make them smarter. I suppose that depends on the prisoners. Are they eating ebikers to prevent them rescuing their bikes from bike jail? I carry a photo of the heavily worn engraving under my motor for the same reason. It's been eroded by gravel and road grit to the point of near invisibility. I've since protected the engraving from further erosion using a clear thick vinyl tape.

MY advice is to make sure that your bike looks absolutely normal - you know, avoid attention drawing features like fairy lights, festoons of cameras, railways semaphore signals poking out the side and so on. - - - - Oh - hang on.......... :)

Be as conspicuous as possible to all drivers and pedestrains, and that's my advice to you and anyone on two wheels. I cycle on roads in busy cities, and I don't have drivers pulling out at me at junctions anymore, or drivers driving too close, or overtaking to cut in too close ahead. Pedestrains notice me because of my bright lights, which are on day and night, visible even when they're walking out without looking into the road from between parked vehicles. I see potholes at night clearly and ahead of time. Very bright lights, lollipops, and a loud horn confer a whole host of safety benefits. All sorts of unpleasant stuff has stopped happening and spoiling my cycling experince. All in all, I'm safer without the cyclists's invisibility disease. Much less stressful cycling, when you are highly visible to all road users. Trust me, it's brilliant, like having an invisible forcefield around the bike repelling cars and people. Makes cycling great again.
