Can anyone explain to me how that bike actually got up to 92mph? That must be one very special motor and battery combo.

Did they actually clock it at 92? Did they ride it at 92? Or are they, once again, relying on an uncalibrated display.

That the bike is illegal is not in doubt but it's the shouty headline designed to cause panic and outrage that pisses me off.

Surely what's shown is that the maximum speed in the display has not been set, doesn't mean that's what the bike will do.

The speedo in my 15cwt van has a 120mph maximum reading but it's never going to achieve that.

Of course it can't go 92 mph. To do 92 mph on the flat would need something like 22 kW of power generated

They just spin up the motor with the wheel off the ground. Some guys, who fit kits like that, don't know about setting the number of magnets in the LCD settings, so the display shows the wrong speed. That's a very common problem on direct drive motors.

The motor in that bike looks a bit more beefy than your average 1000w dinner plate motor, so 40+ mph might be possible.

The controller looksaround 1500w size, and there are no torque arms holding the motor, so probably running around at about 30 mph.

Well exactly, so it comes back to shouty, sensationalist headlines ( based on misinformation and lack of technical knowledge) pandering to a growing popularist need to be seen to be doing something.

I am very fortunate in living in a very rural area and rarely see a policeman. However I do go on holiday and I'm starting to feel that I can't go to any city or large town (my daughter lives in Trowbridge where seizures have been reported) without risking having my legal bike taken from me through some misunderstanding on the part of a young copper trying to make his target of nicks for the week.

As we often see the headline is a sensational media headline due to plods inability in knowing what they are or how they are conducting flawed testing.

92 mph is possible but as d8evh always say's ' only off beachy head' .

Though there are quite a few illegal bikes out there, one only has to know what to look for. There is in fact no need to speed test whether flawed or not, in most cases the motor alone is enough or the presence of a speed control operated device is enough to see if it propels above 6km/m.

Any other argument is simply there to sensationalise the illegality for a headlines sake.
