Another what e bike thread!

Featured Replies

Would love to but as I explained earlier in thread GWR do not allow converted bikes on trains so that option (my favourite) is out of the question.

Yeah sorry, forgot that.

My advice would be to sate your weight, height, terrain and distance you want to cover and budget.

Then I'd ask Saneagle what bike bike(s) he's recommend for your budget and pick one of those.

Have it delivered to your door by Amazon/eBay. Job done.

I can be as much of a mug as the next man when you spot something you really like, but I do always double check before parting with money. I still have a yearning for that samebike LO26, I know its a folder but I just really like it and think it fits my general requirements.

Those sort of bikes might work out OK as long as they keep working, but sadly, they often don't. They're very difficult to modify with standard replacement parts. You know that you'll need a replacement battery sooner or later, and if it has a small one, it's more likely to be sooner.

That's why I always recommend bikes with standard Hailong type batteries, a controller in a separate box and a standard LCD, and if you can find one with a KT controller and LCD, you should jump for it. These sort of bikes might not look as good, but they'll last a lifetime and you can upgrade any parts to what you want.

If one clicks on Samebike's website and look for batteries they appear to have no batteries at all in stock for any of their models.

If one clicks on Size & Fit or Specifications, they both say no information available.

Bit of a red flag right there.

I wouldn't buy any bike where I could not easily replace the battery (or any of the other electric components) myself with generic, off the shelf components five years down the line.

If you know how to wield a soldering iron, you can buy any of the batteries like that that's the same size case, then swap the insides. There are loads of different ones. The difference is mainly the two plastic ends, so swap the ones from your previous battery.

How come that says it has a 48v 14AH and 100Km range at the top but later on says:_

About this item

 • 【Long Range 40-90 KM】Top power 250W motor.Max speed 25 km/h. Equipped with 26"x2.15" tires and a 36V13AH external removable battery, the SAMEBIKE ebike allows for a range of 40-45 km in pure electric mode after just 4 hours of charging. In Pedal-Assist mode, it can travel up to 80-90 km.

I would also wonder what they mean by "pure electric mode"? Does not sound street legal to me!
Yes, what with that and the lack of spare batteries I wouldn't touch it with your barge pole.

Just an observation really having watched hundreds of E Bike reviews on You Tube, how come they always do the speed tests before testing the brakes? :D .......................

E-bikes don't have ranges. Instead, they have a battery with a certain capacity (watt-hours). The capacity is given by watt-hours = amp-hours x volts. If you want to compare ranges of different bikes, you compare the watt-hors in the battery. The actual range you get will be personal to you - how much you weigh, how hilly your ride is, how fit you are and how hard you pedal. Those factors are independent of the bike. I can get 129 miles out of my battery one day when I feel energetic, and the next day get only 20 miles because I'm in a hurry. Anybody can get any range they want out of any ebike.

Likewise, there are no ebikes that are more efficient than others. Efficiency depends on how you use the bike and how well its characteristics match with your riding - bike speed, pedal speed, pedal power, stop-starts, assist level, etc. Therefore, even on identical bikes doing the same ride with two riders of the same weight, you can get completely different ranges.

In summary, when evaluating listings of different bikes, just look at the battery volts and Ah.

That one looks pretty good - all standard parts. It has the waterproof sealed connectors and the integrated controller that make fault-finding very tricky, but at the first sign of any issues, I'd swap out the controller for a KT system and put it in one of those controller boxes. That would give you a much better control system. The only thing I'd change immediately would be to upgrade the brakes to hydraulics at a cost of about £35.

These bikes are generally medium size and are best suited to someone around 5 ft 7". I'm 5 ft 10" and don't notice anything. You can always get some riser bars and put the seat up if you're taller. It's quite rare for these type of bikes to come in different sizes.

It's a standard battery that you can get from anywhere.

If I were 6' 6" and had that Samebike SY26 (very likely medium frame, like you say). I would buy a longer seat post (if needed). Buy hydraulic brakes (Shimano MT200 for me) with long hoses. Dump the front derailleur, shifter and cable (not needed on an electric bike, alternatively buy a longer cable), buy a longer rear derailleur cable and a set of BMX handlebars.

Sam Pilgrim fitted some BMX bars to a mountain bike and loved it.

Check out the video at 5:15 he does a backflip!

Nice looking bike, the price for a replacement/extra battery will be high but at least they exist. soundwave is very knowledgeable about 3rd party places that can work on Bosch motors and where to get the best price for a battery. There are lots of different models of Bos ch batteries that look very similar, be careful to get the correct one (soundwave steered me to allbatteries for a replacement battery for my sisters 10 year old Bosch bike. I think this was the one she got https://www.allbatteries.co.uk/electric-bike-battery-bosch-powerpack-400-type-36v-11-6ah-aml9126cc-109474.html

Not too bad if that fits yours

Wow if I get one for that price I will have one as a spare.

That one is slightly bigger 400Wh. My recollection is that that 400Wh replaced my sister's original 300Wh one. soundwave might know better.

If it is the right one , you could carry that with you to give a massive range
