That settles it then Baloo666, off to Callington you pop.

Get yourself a rear hub kit with a decent battery from Woosh, you'll have a very nice Ebike that can be easily fixed should you need to (my Woosh kit has been faultless for 3 years) for a total spend of about £700.

Alternatively, pop into your local Giant dealership, stick 4 grand on your credit card for a bike and pray nothing goes wrong, because they will totally rinse you if it does.

If I remember correctly the Woosh kits are more powerful than your standard 36V kits (usually 36V 15 A), I think the controller on a lot of the Woosh kits is 36V 18A, but depending on your pedalling ability might be worth going for a 48V kit

I'm all sorted thanks guys, just got to bag a lift off one of the "boys" this weekend. Boys, I'm the youngest at 60! Only one John got a car but Paul has offered to take me on his Harley Trike! This is going to end up like an episode of Last of the summer wine with me clinging on to the back of the trike whilst holding a push bike. I will get pictures to amuse you I promise.

Two things have happened,

One, I have wobbled around on a conventional bike and I can definately ride a bike still I even made it up a steep but short incline without inducing cardiac arrest. That is the good news.

Two. I was reading the forum in the early hours of the morning and discovered that converted e bikes are not allowed on GWR trains, that is a real downer for me I do not want the hassle of arguing the toss if I take the train. So it is back to plan A and buying a legal "off the shelf" bike.:(

I would recommend you re-read post #16 as well. At least have a look around for good low mileage fully working bikes that their owners didn't end up using much.

I'd take a good high spec mid-drive over a cheap Chinese bike any day if the price was the same.

If you can blag a full or half day test ride, maybe from a shop or a friend, you will get to understand what those bikes are like. You might not be won over, but you'd have the knowledge.

Thank you, where would you recomend looking for second hand bikes? I am linited to bikes close to me unless buying from a trusted seller who can get the bike to me.:)

Yes, Cornwall is a long way from almost everywhere!

As a guide to what's out there even if not close, I'd look at eBay, and many people mention Facebook marketplace. I don't use Facebook but you may know someone who does.

I'd be talking to bike shops and ebikers you meet to try and set up a test ride.

Found a site called My next bike and fell in love with this, any opinion, need to find out what size battery but I could make an offer of £700 if its a buyers market.

Be careful with those bikes. Only a dealer can fix electrical issues, so make sure that you have the correct dealer near where you live.

For sure it is a buyer's market, so don't rush or be rushed.

A few things to check:

It has a Yamaha motor, so where is your nearest Yamaha approved bike shop? Find them, and chat to them. Get an idea of their capabilities.

The bike itself, check the battery size. Reviews suggest there was a choice of 720Wh or 500Wh. Bigger one is much to be preferred, and would alter my opinion of value by at least £100.

Check total mileage covered, check length and level of warranty offered by the seller as obviously out of Haibike warranty. If possible you want also a Yamaha dealer diagnostic report, and make a clean bill of health a condition of the contract.

The electrics - motor, battery and display - are the critical things. Everything else is just standard bike stuff which will child's play to you with your motor bike experience.

I like the spec with mudguards etc already there, but all that can be added to a bike that has better spec electric bits. But that motor with ideally the bigger battery is pretty good.

It is worth recognising the comments about 'only a dealer can fix it', but if looked after and regularly used and ridden mostly only to 80% of its capability there is no reason for it to go wrong.

The most important bit of looking after it is minimising exposure to water. Don't rely on IP ratings, just keep it dry, ride in the rain if you need to, but not for its own sake, never let a pressure washer near it, store under cover and indoors if possible.

Expect 20,000 miles minimum life, and the Yamaha motor CAN be refurbished, so potential for long useful life.

I was in Cornwall last summer, clocking up the last bit of my first 40,000km. Not all on one motor though.

Land's End (yuck) and the Lizard (much nicer!)

And just a footnote: 2021 means it is a COVID bike. Bought in the enthusiasm of lockdown ending, but likely not used much.

Battery health report is very important. They do not like sitting around either full or flat.

Land's End (yuck) and the Lizard (much nicer!)

Exactly my memory from visiting in the early 1960's

Maybe try free ads, it used to be a newspaper type thing years ago but it's online now.

That trike i just bought came with 3 x 15ah batteries, spare inner tubes etc. and is only 19 months old. I got it for only £150. It was up for £100 but I gave more.

Definitely a buyers market.

Nearest dealer is Falmouth so that is no problem and would guess will of been purchased and maintained by them. Any opinions welcome.

What refurbishment was done and why? When will you have to get it refurbished. I've never had to refurbish any of my bikes!

This is why I value the imput on here, would not of thought of that. Anway on checking specs looks like it is 36v, sticking to your original

48v 250 w recomendation ideally with 26inch wheels and weight arond 25kg minimun 15ah battery.

Big ask to get that in my budget but the search continues!

I bought mine direct from. Duotts on Alibaba, was delivered in a couple of days, they have UK stock. If you go to Alibaba and message them they will give you a price

https://www.alibaba.com/x/1lAJ2eb?ck=pdp

One concern is that in other places they say it is 750w, but I have saved my invoice that states it is the 250w rated version It comes restricted to 15.5 mph

My review https://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/duotts-c29-48v-15ah-cheap-bike.49042/

The other one to consider is this

https://www.varunebike.com/products/varun-m27-1-electric-bike

I have a feeling they don't ship this model to the UK any more, just EU. Maybe that varun m26-2 that saneagle linked to and buy a higher capacity battery capacity that fits - would still be below your budget

When I enquired on Alibaba, they quoted £432 delivered

https://www.alibaba.com/x/1lAJ3D8?ck=pdp

I think this has a slower speed motor (people complained after they derestricted it , it's top speed was less than 20 mph !) but this will probably give it better hill climbing ability.

Also I believe it has a more sensible 48v 15A controller so it probably has a similar range to the Duotts, even with a slightly smaller battery.

You may have to make some adjustments in terms of getting it comfortable for your height (handlebars, saddle)

I was up until the early hours of the morning looking at e bikes and I think this fits what I want exactly apart from 21 gears but that not a deal breaker. Samebike get good reviews for customer service and it has the added bonus of folding for train travel. No rack but me and a mate could knock one up in ali in an afternoon if I cannot find a after market one. Rear brake light the same. What do you all think?https://uk.samebike.com/products/samebike-lo26-ii-electric-mountain-bike

Looks good and a great price though I would not trust a folding bike for anything more than city or light trekking use!

Looks great, I love the rear suspension.

The title says hydraulic brakes but the pictures show cable disc brakes. Could be they upgraded the brakes but not the pictures.

There are plenty of bike rack options on AliExpress.

A 26" folder is quite a lump to haul on and off trains. I noticed they also do a 20" folder which would be easier to transport, not sure if that would interest you.

As I have a disabled persons railcard, I have spoke to GWR and confirmed I can get assistance at the train station and although they sounded surprised that a disabled person would be traveling with a bike and not a motability scooter or trike, they will get me someone to help unload /load bike at station.

Rdit. I hope I can manage on my own but it is good to know I can get backup.
