The new best headlight

Featured Replies

When out last night I kept waiting for it to go flat.. but it didn't, which is good bearing in mind it has 2 leds...

Nevertheless, you should always carry a spare light. Without one, you're walking home.

As for the 'next best headlight'. For 16 quid, I really can't knock it. :)

Some people are content in not getting what they have paid for. Others aren't.

Not exactly sure what you mean here.. My £15 bought me a well made very bright double cree light with a battery and charger .. And a free surprisingly good rear light.

I think this is good value for money.

I have no idea who your comment was directed at, but if it were at me...

Given that no claim is made in respect of what make, authenticity or brand that the batteries are, what is your comment suppossed to mean?

Personally, I reckon I got what I paid for. It's an inexpensive, fit for purpose, small sized, single LED bike light. It can be head or bike mounted and does a good job of illuminating the road or path ahead, even when going cross country. What's not to like? :)

Walking home?? Swimming home more like!! Unless the previously blinded dog walkers have recovered enough of their sight to fish me out of the canal...

I can see everyone's point of view on this thread which range from discounted Lidl lights that do the job, through various chinese and UK offerings up to SW's efforts to get literally the biggest bestest headlight that's possible.

Can we all agree that this has been an interesting and informative thread?

Just to qualify my earlier comment, it isn't aimed at anybody in particular, but it was prompted by one of EddiePJ's comments. The comment wasn't intended to 'troll' or wind anybody up.

When I purchase a battery with an advertised capacity, I expect to recieve said battery that delivers the advertised capacity. Although I don't know the actual capacities of the batteries purchased by various members who have contributed to this thread, I'm willing to bet that every single one of them purchased through ebay or any other China site fails to deliver the advertised capacity.

The one exception to this is soundwave, who I believe has purchased genuine cells. He of course paid a premium price for them, but with batteries, you definitely get what you pay for.

Following SW's lead I also bought the premium batteries which cost £26 for 4 cells and then another tenner for the box for them to go in made it quite an expensive power source, and as this was on the bike when it was stolen I will not be replacing it as it was just too expensive..

I take your point about the alleged capacity, but most of us have no way to check that anyway..

you definitely get what you pay for.

Clearly not in my case, and nowhere have I made reference to capacity.

I paid about £8.00 for my six cell pack which is now on it's third winter season of use, and I guess has already given given me about 4,000 plus miles of off road use, and a very conservative guess of 350 hrs hours of use over that period.

To claim that you only got what you have paid for is clearly wrong in this case, especially given that I am still using said cheapo pack, which gets used and abused in all conditions, along with me taking zero care over charging.

The one and only issue that I have had is that the wires to the charger became fragile where they leave the charger. No big deal given the cost of the whole package.

So tell me how that is not good value for money, and how it could be improved upon, especially given the £8.00 cost?

The other thing about this cheap stuff from China is that you can pay a premium and buy it off a UK seller who has bought a job lot and is selling on at a profit.. I think the phrase "you get what you pay for" is mainly used when someone has gone cheap and ended up with a Duck Egg!!
Clearly not in my case.

Without hard figures, it is impossible to qualify that you have got what you paid for. Of course, I have made a huge generalisation; an assumption made from my previous experience of buying cells and anecdotal evidence of others'. My experience does tell me however that 99% of cells bought on ebay (or any cell with 'fire' in the name) will fail to deliver the advertised capacity.

I totally accept however that you feel that you have received value for money from your purchase, which is not what I am discussing.

I am not knocking unbranded China produce. I purchase more than most and in fact my income almost wholly depends on it.

What I do know however, is that unbranded 18650 cells are, IMPO, 'junk'. Even most branded ones on Ebay are fake.

Wooohoo there we have it people who make a recommendation do so as they are happy with what they got. Those who go against do so because they have had a different experience. Neither is wrong that's where review sites come in. There's always a wide range of scores as a general rule

I try to find a site with a high number of reviews if general reviews above4.3 it's likely to be good below 3.5 I wouldn't use your barge poll to touch it with

its like comparing mdf with solid oak yes my cells from china will power my light i have on full for just over an hour b4 they go flat.

with the Panasonic cells it was on for 5 hrs and still had plenty left in them.

there 3400ma and cost 5 quid each and the case was 9 quid.

so if you compare it to that there cheaper and will last 2 times as long and less than half the price.

why i have a nitcore charger for mine cant trust a wall wart adaptor ;)

Anyone who 'charges' their batteries with a butane torch deserves as much.

Right, I've derailed this thread enough as it is. It was originally about a specific light that seems to have been fairly well received, so all's well that ends well...

....Except for the nob torching batteries.

if you pull massive loads from them then they will explode as will get hot fast vid just speeds up what will happen ;)

might turn my plane in to a fire ball pmsl ;)

Even though it's nearly Nov 5 I don't think it will catch on my money is on sparklers:cool:

just an afterthought any one stupid enough to try cycling in the dark with a sparkler for illumination. Hope not

Back to original subject, my light finally arrived today.

Has a good quality feel to it.

Test in the morning and compare with my big light which only get's used on the pitch black dark lanes out of town away from cars.DSCN0059.JPG.426d318539cb1ecc4f05076f7ae0827b.JPG DSCN0058.JPG.29aa381b4283eeee41332872e2f43319.JPG
