I hadn't noticed that. I can only guess that it might be one of two reasons, or both of the following.

 

I'm still running summer tyres, so perhaps not so much muck is thrown up.

 

Also, the ride speed is comparatively quite slow, so maybe not so much muck is thrown up.

 

I wish that I could have said the same of an eMTB ride last week. I went through a dog egg, that covered the bike, my Camelbak, and me. I'd happily see every dog shot dead if I had my way!

Didn't know dogs laid eggs.. once on the towpath feeding the ducks with a small child I asked him if he knew where eggs came from. He said yes they come from the shop...

But back to the dog eggs.. I assume they are not palatable which would explain why they are left in small black plastic bags..

I wonder what they hatch into....

As a cyclist I did get one shot dead by its owner, so a small victory.

 

Of course the antipathy is both ways, numerous dogs chase cyclists with murderous intent, and that's why the one above was shot.

Apart from Police dogs and guide dogs, yes. It's an epidemic.

Come on guys it's not the dogs fault but irresponsible owners not clearing up afterwards. When I had my Golden Retriever's I always carried fragrant nappy sacks and at about 30 or 40p for packet of cheap ones, it makes no sense for owners not to do their bit.

I knew someone who brushed her dog's teeth. If yer picking up a dog's faeces and brushing its teeth, there's something disordered in the World.

My view, as a non dog owner, is that most will leave it where it lands if theres no one about and they think they can get away with it, after all who wants to pick up a warm t*rd?

The canal towpath is a perfect location for this and it is so bad that on several occasions I have gone onto the grass to make room for a dog walker only to ride through some other's leavings which isnt noticed until I park up in the garage and get the smell and find its plastered everywhere.

When out walking I dont like to be sniffed at, growled at, barked at or even rounded up by the odd sheepdog. I dont want muddy paws on me either when they decide to jump up at me, and it doesnt help when the owner says things like.. dont worry he doesnt bite, or he likes you, or even standing with hands on hips talking to the animal as though it will actually take notice.

Us cyclists are ofter berated for not considering other shared path users, but I think dog owners are about as considerate a smokers.. And that doeasnt take into account the professioanl walkers who have half a dozen or more in tow, or not as they are often off of the lead.

Or, am I a just a miserable old bstd?

I couldn't agree more - agree word for word with you. Your experiences mirror my own exactly. so that's 2 "mob's at least!

I was accosted at the post office by a small but very angry dog who didn't mind cyclists but hated high vis jackets. The noise and agresion from such a small dog was unbelievable. If it wasn't tethered I am sure it would have eaten me.

Why is it that with our climate in the UK we are happy to ride bikes without mudguards? This may work in Marin County in Calfornia but not in damp Britain. Is it because they look cool? To my mind there is nothing cool about a line of keich up your back or worse in your face.

 

Until all the irresponsible people have been shot just fit mudguards.

The other thing I forgot add is that the nicer dogs that are more or less under control want to beat me to death with their tails or just lick me! Yuk! Yuk! Dogs lick their own and others bottoms among other things... Some of the other things being their owners faces, mouths even! Double Yuk!

Even more ridiculous are that many of those owners don't even walk their dogs, paying professional dog walkers to take them out each day. This has led to so many problems with numbers of out of control dogs that we now have an enforced bylaw in my borough limiting any dog walker to four dogs.

 

But such is their anti-social attitude that they've even beaten that now by pairing up to have eight dogs at a time in an often out of control and sometimes aggressive pack. And of course they rarely clean up after the dogs, only doing so when in full view of others and even then hanging the waste bag on a tree as soon as they are out of sight.

Meeting 8 dogs at one go on the towpath would be... Interesting!!

There is a disabled old lady near me who needs one of those arm crutches to get about with her large Alsatian. She walks it out of where she lives, 70 yards down the footpath and onto a grassy path outside someone else house and stands to let it do its thing. The owner of this house who I know well and has a dog of her own clears this mess up when she sees it not knowing who is responsible, until one day she cought her at it so to speak.

When challenged the old lady said "But I am disabled!"

She now goes a different way with her dog and has become able to bend down and pick it up..

I once challenged someone for leaving doggy bag on a wall and the quick fire response was "going to pick it up on the way back"

Also a menace at times since it can be a very persistent problem relating to one spot.

 

Pet ownership really needs more legislative control:

 

Dogs should be subject to compulsory chipping and registration.

 

Each household subject to a two dog limit for registration.

 

Dog owners should require an annual renewal paid for licence.

 

Professional dog walkers in addition to a licence should be registered with the local authority in any areas they practice. Since they commonly hold keys to owners homes to get dogs out to walk them, they should also be subject to a CRB check. They after all have freedom of access to homes which might have childen and vulnerable adults present.

 

This set of measures would bring about a marked reduction of the numbers of dogs in our country, leaving them more likely to be in the ownership of serious and responsible owners.

 

Cats are a more difficult subject, but making it illegal to own more than two adult cats per household would help with control and prevent the all too common overcrowding and neglect problems that occur with them.

As a cat I must protest about cyclists who don't oil their components properly. The amount of times I've been woken from a relaxing nap, only to find that the squeak wasn't a tasty rodent, but something for the want of some lubrication, honestly, get a grip.

It's all verv well for you living in spacious, sparsely populated Scotland, but in densely populated towns and cities a large excess of cats and dogs is a really serious problem, often for those animals as much as for the humans.

 

And judging by the rat infestation problems in large towns and cities, the cats and dogs are lazy as well as being a nuisance.

Cats are habitual soilers, and I managed to sort my cat problems long ago, they have moved on to someone else and didnt come back. I saw one trying to sneak in over the railway wall to the bird feeders, it dropped down onto a bird bath and then to the garden where it got the shock of its life and ran away. I use a good quality cat scarer which works a treat.

With some communal land around my home I have a different method with cats. When I've noticed a nuisance one I fling open the French door and run full tilt straight at the cat as if with murderous intent, chasing it out right of sight. Once is enough, they are all terrified of me now, running at first sight.

 

I learnt that method of dealing with cats from dogs, it's always worked well for them.
