March 1, 20188 yr My understanding is that , contrary to newspaper reports UK has not yet experienced storm Emma. What you have, and you got it before us is the Siberian wind and snow. Which obviously came from the East. Emma is coming up from the south and will be hitting the south western part of ireland about now, and will travel towards the uk overnight. Our weather forecast is for a proper blizzard. So parts of the uk which are currently less affected like the north west coast will get it tomorrow. The combination of extremely cold air and moist warmer air will cause the major effect...
March 1, 20188 yr The ride home was far colder than this morning - though I think a thermometer wouldn't have seen much difference. -2 at home - or rather, on the car thermometer (as we had to go out and do a bit of shopping so as to avoid doing so on Friday evening or Saturday when it is predicted to be worse). I'd felt the wind quite strongly this morning, but considerably more chilling now. On the north east coast of Ireland, we are feeling a wind slightly stronger than " quiet strongly", try, "difficult to stand up in". And with the appropriate wind chill factor. What is novel is that there is very little moisture in it.

March 1, 20188 yr Thanks tommie, keep warm. We had plenty of Snow yesterday, but very little since.. there is snow in the air but the gale is scouring it and driving it south. The Cooley's look nice, when we can see them....
March 1, 20188 yr Another nice commute, shorts and t shirt, 20C, no wind. This amazing summer just keeps rolling on. Wife's being commuting most days as well.
March 1, 20188 yr The beast from the east has beat me after yesterdays commute home, I went in the car today and will again tomorrow. I know I'm an efailure.
March 1, 20188 yr The beast from the east has beat me after yesterdays commute home, I went in the car today and will again tomorrow. I know I'm an efailure. I wouldn't call anyone any sort of failure for not cycling in this weather. (The fact that I have cycled to and from work every work day of the year so far, including today, doesn't mean I won't duck out tomorrow. Will have to see what it's like. The biggest single factor is safety.)
March 1, 20188 yr The biggest single factor is safety.) Safety was the main reason as the back lanes I use are not gritted and just shear ice for a few miles, ontop of that my back brake cable was frozen solid and touching my front brake would be a fall, so I let myself off.
March 2, 20188 yr Brilliant sunshine and clear blue sky after last nights gale force winds. I think we are heading for the mid twenties again.
March 2, 20188 yr I think we are heading for the mid twenties again. You aren't making any friends here
March 2, 20188 yr Oh well I'll just turn the heating off then... It was turned off for three days in February already!
March 2, 20188 yr Work called off today so took my new Cube Reaction Hybrid out for a spin. Amazing how easily eBikes handle snow, ice etc. Was so much fun. Local duck pond looks inviting for a dip! Not! Sent from my Moto G (5) using Tapatalk
March 2, 20188 yr The night was cold. Windows on front of house look like heavily obscured glass. Opened garage door - took some effort due to ice and snow blown against it. All togged up. Got on bike in several inches of snow and actually enjoyed a few yards. Then realised that what looked to be clear patches were actually sheets of ice - quarter to half inch thick. And deadly slippery. I couldn't avoid these patches and there is no way I could get anywhere safely. Plus wind at (forecast) 46 mph. Gave up. :-( Working from home.
March 2, 20188 yr Watched the snow fall yesterday, willing it to get harder! Had frozen rain in the night, so snow was crispy with crazy drifts up to 6' high. Had the same problem as oyster opening the garage door and soon found out what the "clear" bits were all about!! Thought I'd start off easy with a careful decent of Gold Hill, and before you ask, no, I wasn't carrying any Hovis!! Picked myself up at the bottom and did around 10 miles of snowy lanes and paths. Great fun!! I know not strictly a commute, but I did have to work quite hard, if that counts!
March 2, 20188 yr Weird weather. Very little snow overnight but what a wind !! . It has found crevices and gaps in the house noone knew we'd there. The odd thing is that the brisk!!!! Very Dry air is actually drying the snow and making it disappear. It certainly not the air temperature Paths around the house now dry . North East Ireland. However even 6 km inland the story is .different with 1.3 metre drifts and impassible minor roads. Cycling would be impossible..
March 2, 20188 yr Not loads of snow here in Liverpool, but very, very cold wind, commuting has been unpleasant but not impossible. Got the bus today, not because I can't hack it, but because me and the wife are on the p*ss in town straight after work tonight and I don't do drink riding anymore
March 2, 20188 yr Author Southend this afternoon: half of the snow has gone, winds have also died down a little bit, not so cold (just about freezing) but it was still snowing a bit when I went out for a ride.
March 2, 20188 yr Southend this afternoon: half of the snow has gone, winds have also died down a little bit, not so cold (just about freezing) but it was still snowing a bit when I went out for a ride. Whereas over here, it started snowing again around lunchtime, sometimes quite heavily. Temperature rose, but I think it will drop again now. Most certainly we will now have snow over ice - it is just smooth and white. Doubt I'll be going anywhere before tomorrow afternoon.
March 2, 20188 yr This morning 2 hours getting less than 5 miles on m/c. 1 and half hours charging battery and then negotiating snow drift and ice covered roads. Worked for a couple of hours and came home without falling off. Gifted a crate of Shiraz and ass wines, two bottles of Scotch and a pressure washer from neighbours that have been moving home all through the rough weather. Sorted till 10am tomorrow when I'm meant to be back at work. :-)
