October 2, 20187 yr I’ve gone down one word answer route (maybe two) I like the following responses to Cheat ! Or That’s cheating etc “Nope , commuting” “Ok, bye-bye” ‘Just travelling? “ “Having fun!” With a cheery smile mostly If you got a dongled bike, they are very rude and you feel childish and Viz like then you might try “With yer Mum!” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
October 3, 20187 yr I've had one woman yell at me that I "was cheating" as I coasted down the street. I stopped and started a good-natured conversation about how you have to pedal to move. She was very interested in the bike, and some two weeks later I saw her cycling down the street on a Raleigh Motus. Give people have a chance and they'll probably see the wisdom in owning a pedelec.
October 3, 20187 yr I think it is almost an involuntary reaction for some folk that havn't experienced riding an electric bike to see someone seemingly coasting effortlessly up an incline with a smile on their face, to react as they often do. As you experienced Steve, Those open minded enough to see the merits do, and the others just keep struggling on regardless.
October 3, 20187 yr I was out a while ago on my ebike, passed a buxom mid 30s blonde scorcher who said I was cheating. I was pleasant to her and followed with a nice long chat about the benefits of ebiking. Things naturally moved on to a suggestion of popping off together to a country pub for a few drinks to continue the chat, after that was invited back to hers and spent the rest of the weekend at her place, suffice to say I didn't get any sleep, she kept me at it, dunno where she got the energy from, wow. What a cracking time I had, all brought about by an cheating shout out. So embrace the criticism with a chat back, might work out great like it did with me.
October 3, 20187 yr I've still yet to experience a properly negative reaction from any cyclist. I did once have a car driver shout 'get a real bike you xxxx...', to which I shouted back that it was closer to a real bike than his. There's definitely a few roadies that won't acknowledge a nod of the head, but not sure if that's just the MTB vs roadie thing rather than an e-bike thing [emoji23] Sent from my Power_3 using Tapatalk
October 3, 20187 yr I pointed at a colleagues derailleur and 7 geared cassette, I told him that must make life easier. Only a fixie rider gets to call me a cheat!! Free wheel, what ever next.

October 4, 20187 yr I get it at the bike shop all the time my response is ill buy a proper bike when I have the money. I was out riding the other month and two blokes on racers passed me on the strait peddling like mad. One said all rite pal as they passed. There was a nice big climb up ahead and I just kept my pace. I passed them quarter of the way up and said see ya pal. He shouted you fxxxxxg bxxxxxd and I laughed at him. I had a look at the top and they were still only half way up. I had plenty of juice left after the hill so didn't see them again. It's only cheating if you want it to be a fair contest and I'm not competing because I know my bike is faster in the long run
October 4, 20187 yr Let's face it. We're not roadies, nor would we want to be. They can keep their Lycra, 7-ounce £14,000 racing bikes and the pain ointment that goes with it. I'm climbing hills on my ebike that I would have to walk otherwise; and anything over £50 is a proper bike.
October 4, 20187 yr I agree. My days of cycling with my spine parallel to the road are over. Even as a kid I couldn't keep up with my mates so my pedelec is a total freedom to me.

Totally me and I got my bike to take me fishing and camping where I could only dream of in a car or on a normal bike. I go fishing where no man fished before or it feels like it. I can spend a few days there charge up and be off and nobody knows I was there. Its great

October 5, 20187 yr had similar comments on my commute - their problem not mine as far as I am concerned - like the "yup" response though, gonna use that next time Also had the opposite happen Overtook a chap on a 20" wheel bike with drop handlebars on my commute home, there was a bit of a headwind and I was head down myself, wasnt surprised to cruise past him - couple of miles later I came to a T junction, checked round before pulling out and the guy is a couple of feet behind in my slipstream. He said a cheery "thanks mate" and we went opposite ways

There are a few fellow commuters (but serious roadies) I’ve got vaguely acquainted with over the years. They normally are delighted to see me on those days ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
October 6, 20187 yr Don't even bother responding, dont even bother looking. People say stuff to me all the time, I don't even acknowledge them unless they wave at me, then its the usual...how far can you go, how much does that cost. Not sure what response he was after to be honest, he wasn't joking that is for sure!/QUOTE]
November 28, 20187 yr I think it is almost an involuntary reaction for some folk that havn't experienced riding an electric bike to see someone seemingly coasting effortlessly up an incline with a smile on their face, to react as they often do. As you experienced Steve, Those open minded enough to see the merits do, and the others just keep struggling on regardless. It's rather rude actually as those calling cheat have no idea why I ride an ebike or how I ride it. Suffering severe spinal and heart problems making walking difficult my doc an physio suggested cycling so I bought a second hand bike to try after a 20 year break. Apart from my lack of general fitness my only real problem was launching myself due to lack of balance. I am also seventy years of age. I persevered and my general fitness has improved but not my balance problem making setting off on the road from a standing start a risky affair. I also had worries about getting too far away from home and being unable to get back home Der my own steam. An ebike was the obvious solution and what a solution. Cycling is now thoroughly enjoyable and yet I don't use the motor 80% of the time. I bought a Raleigh Motus on recommendation and that recommendation was 100% correct. The other 20% of the time is generally ECO mode with only very occassionally going into TOUR and very rarely, SPORT for steep hills. TURBO has been tried obviously but I find I just do not need to use it at all. People seem to think you are riding an electric power motorcycle for some reason hence the CHEAT. Even if a purist considers it cheating it could only be called that in competition. Is used a walking stick to aid walking 'cheating'? Let's face it, I don't really give a hoot about their lack of insight but there is no need to be rude about it. Whatever you ride, normal bike or ebike, it's one less gas guzzling, smoke emmitting motor vehicle on the road. The only person to calling it cheating to my face was my daughter's current boyfriend who actually knows my physical disabilities so he's had his card marked for him! LOL
November 28, 20187 yr I had a 35 something fat knacker - 25stone plus - call me a Cheat one year outside Tesco ..I said he liked like a pro cyclist in his 3/4 length jeans black shoes and white socks and when I asked him how much cycling he did he shuffled away... So if anyone call you a cheat stick two fingers up to them and ride away with pride --- you are cycling and not sat eating your chlids weight in Gregs pies every hour .

Reminds me of when I was working outside loading trailers and we had an old man in a van come everyday with a delivery of pies for our morning break.. We refered to him as P1ssy Fingers.. cos he never washed his hands and was always backswiping his runny nose in winter.. Still bought a pie tho... Dam good they were on a frosty morning... November 29, 20187 yr Cycling to work this morning I stopped at the lights and another cyclist stopped next and randomly called me a cheater. "Oi that's cheating riding that" Yeah.... it was 6.30am and I hadn't had my coffee so I didn't really deal with it the best way.... I may have got a bit angry, got a bit sweary and he road off quite fast. Not sure what response he was after to be honest, he wasn't joking that is for sure! What's with the anti ebikes vibe from other cyclists? I don't get it! Anyone else have these kind of issues before?
November 29, 20187 yr I like to reply that i used to own one of those old fashioned bikes years ago, wearing lycra is realy trying to cheat the wind, toe clips give extra assistance, carbon frames are cheating weight, extra gears, most cyclists try and make it easier to pedal,so are cheating in some form.
November 29, 20187 yr cos he never washed his hands and was always backswiping his runny nose in winter. I guess as long as he was wearing a plastic bag on his head he passed the H&S checks.
November 29, 20187 yr I guess as long as he was wearing a plastic bag on his head he passed the H&S checks. No such thing in them days.
November 29, 20187 yr No such thing in them days No, I realize that, it was just an image in my head, that made me chuckle.
November 29, 20187 yr I've plenty of ways of dealing with this from, all in a nice way But today I was speechless for the first time ever. A rather old and rather overweight lady on a mobility scooter pulled up next to me. I had stopped at the roadside to take a call and she was on the pavement Cue "has that got a motor". Yes it has for this is an electric pedal assist cycle. "thats cheating " said the woman. Who then stood up and walked into the post office Now I know disabilities are not obvious always and many other reasons why using such a scooter and then walking is needed and provides much needed independence for many However , it is a bit bloody rich to make the cheating comment when she knows nothing about me or my personal situation !! November 29, 20187 yr Carry on like this and y’all will put me off riding my new-to-me BB Quartz, I’m choosing to ride it because I’ve had two heart attacks in the last 4 years, Dr. says I’m only half hearted decause I’m propped up by seven coronary stents and many daily pills at 81, walking is my weakness because some days I can walk a hundred yards, on others I collapse after 1/2 an isle round Tesco, 25 years ago my life as a firefighter for 28 years was very physical, now my 5 motorcycles may get used for odd days in the summer but the e-bike is something I’ve really been looking forward to — until reading about these sad folk.
